Talking Cheap, yet cool mod.

Hey guys, I know most of you wouldnt do this, but take it from me, cutting the top off your airbox sounds mean as hell! I had doubts, thought it would look/sound/perform like ****, but I figured wtf, I'll just do it (The 911 guys do it all the time, they even sell what essentially looks like a chopped airbox w/a k&n in Excellence). So I did it. I cut it so that the frame with screws stayed to hold the filter in place, and junked the rest (whoever knows how expensive that part is, I dont wanna know). Anywho, car sounds normal in idle, no annoying sucking intake noises, once you gun it without load, it sounds throatier. However, drive the car and you will notice a smoother idle, better throttle responce, and a MONSTER of a wail under full throttle. I love it. Make sure you shake the dust out of your filter every so often and scrape the foam crap from the intake's side of the hood cause it can fall apart and get sucked on to the filter element. Better yet, get a washable K&N.
I know, I know, the air is hotter in the engine bay, but I bet the minimal losses I suffered were recouped by the minimal gains. Plus, look at all those non-cold air cone filters, same idea. Oh yeah, car feels a bit faster in high rpms, but it could ba a placebo effect from the monster sound. I actually recommend this mod/mutilation. I think I'll get a vented nose panel, but then again, I'm afraid of hydrolock in the wet.

ps, operating temperatures have remained the same, and motor sounds the same when not under 3/4-full throttle.

I don't know what to say.

If my mechanic (who has never actually worked on my car) saw that, he would laugh his *** off and then say why it was a good idea (or bad?). He did that when Mike and i drilled holes in my throttle cam to rotate it to make it work like a round one. Oh well,

Anyone else tried this?

Hey Yellow, I happen to have an extra Airbox top sitting in my office that I had entended to do the same thing to. Then I would keep the original for backup just incase. I'll let you know if it chainges anything.
