I just picked up a catalytic converter and a bursch exhaust at hershey, I installed it and I thought it was great. The car seemed quicker and more responsive. I also was able to smoke a damn rice burners easier late 2 nights ago. But when I brought my car to have some oil seals, timing, balace, belts and water pump to be replaced he remarked at what a piece of **** it was. And that it was robbing me of lots of power. i told him that, im not idiot, and i know that it felt better and faster to me. He told me that there is no way it is giving me more power, he said if anything, it is robbing me of lots of power.
What do you guys think? I have know this guy for years and he has never led me astray.

I did, he never gave me a straight answer, just the fact that a good exhaust system should be over 1000 bucks, and something about backpressure???

Find a new mechanic.

Well, on a non-Turbo car which uses intake-tract & exhaust harmonic tuning, you do want some backpressure to have some low-end torque. Having a catalytic there will provide that function.
Sure, you may not be making high-HP numbers at 6000rpm, but you'll be faster than if you completely opened up your exhaust with 4" piping. If you were to do that, then that'll require re-timing the cams, higher-comp. pistons , and new chips to really optimize your power.

If you just purchased a new catalytic converter, and now find a bit more "seat of the pants" acceleration, consider that your old CC might have been clogged up, and actually robbing you of power.
The new one may be flowing more air, closer to OEM, and that explains the better response.
And yeah, your mechanic is a dolt.

I also have a bursch exhaust and I love the way it sounds and the change it gave me from the stock exhaust with a hole in it. I paid 250 bucks for it from performance products. I also have an 86na.
