Question To What Line Should the Coolant Tank be Filled?

To what line should the coolant tank be filled on a cold car? The min or the max line?

I fill mine about a inch above the min line when cold. Then when the car warms up, the coolant expands about 3/4 of the way up to max. Don't fill to max when cold, the system will most likely spit it out the overflow once it warms up.

Well, that explains it. I filled it up to the Max line when cold and now have a puddle under the car. It is sitting just below the max line now with the car warm.

Hey, where are you guys finding Phosphorous Free Antifreeze, I haven't seen it anywhere here in the Maryland area. Do I need to just get it from a dealer?

I have been using the "Autobahn" brand coolant from the VW dealer. The VW's also need phosphorus free stuff. Just be sure to get the stuff for older VW's (not the orange stuff) and it should be Blue in color.

Phospherus free is just because our rads are aluminum, right? I use stuff from Mercedes and it is kinda orange.

No Tazz, our rads are AL also, and plastic end tanks that love to crack. I'd be more worried about the radiator and those small passages than the motor.

The old green stuff and distilled water has worked just fine for me in AL engines with all sorts of different metals in the rest of the system. Anyone ever had a corrosion problem doing this? I doubt it.

The orange 5 year Dex-Cool has a real checkered history on corosion .... I flushed mine out when I read all the horror stories and went back to green.

I know the radiator is aluminum I meant no it's not just becase of that. I thought the other coolant was really bad for the engine also.
