Default Aftermarket oil pressure sender, "!" dash light

My '86 951 has an aftermarket oil pressure sender and gauge, the original apparently was not working too well. The two wires that went to the original sending unit are just disconnected, and the dash has the "!" light on all the time, and the stock oil pressure gauge reads "0" with a red light on. This is quite annoying, and I wonder if anyone knows how to fix/bypass this? I have read that the oil gauge can be shorted and will read max "5 bar" all the time. I would much rather this than be in the glow of the red dash lights all the time!

I think you just connect the two wires....

Hook the wires back up to the sending unit, backwards.

I'd prefer (and plan) to have both working...

On a working car, if hooked up backwards as suggested, you get a solid +5 rating, and then (and lol at this), the red '!' comes on periodically depending on the pressure (it faintly glows around 2psi, and comes on more as it gets lower). not designed to do this, but pretty cool none the less... as far as 'broked' goes.

I did try connecting the two wires, and nothing changed. I'm not sure if something needs grounded or not.
The original sending unit is gone, with the aftermarket (a one wire unit) in it's place. I could go back to the original, just get a new sender, but I like the aftermarket. It's an Autometer and seems pretty accurate.

Ah. Me, I would go with an original (or OEM style original), hook up the original setup, then get a spin on oil filter adapter and hook the autometer through that.

Then you can get pressure and temperature. =)

This is why you fail... j/k. In all seriousness The reason that those suggestions won't work is because the two wires at the sender are not power and ground for the gauge. One wire is for the ! light, and the other is for the gauge. If you short both wires to ground, the light should go out and the gauge should read "5".

I hooked both together and jumpered them to ground. No change.

you need a resistor or potentiometer between the wires and ground. 0 ohm is no pressure. 100 ohm is about 3 bar and 185 ohm is 5 bar.
