Post any of you have persistent oil in coolant with 944s2 - any ideas how to fix - my mech

Hi there,
Sorry to bother you but I'm getting desperate about my 944 S2 (89) and my mechanic suggested I go on the web as there are many more Porsches in the US than Australia (where we are) and this may be a problem someone else has encountered.

We have a 944 S2 which has had a persistent problem with getting oil in the cooling system causing overheating etc.

The car has been in to the shop several times for the same problem. All relevant seals have been replaced, all the hoses a few times and even the head gasket. Last time it was fixed just one week went by before the problem happened again.

Our mechanic has checked for cracks in the head and says he didn't find any. He's the 3rd mechanic we've been to to try and fix this problem. He's tried very hard but just can't isolate the problem. The car is undriveable at the moment.

Any suggestions as to what this might be would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

cheers

Kazzy

Oil cooler seal. If there is water in the oil as well, then I would say probably a head gasket. Is your mechanic a Porsche mechanic?

Don't drive it in this condition...

Fellow S2 owner and Rennlister "Tom R" knows ALL about this problem. You might try doing a search under his nick for more information.

Good luck with it!

I did the o ring job three times to my car. first two times were by a competent mechanic that is not a Porsche mechanic.

third time i went to a Porsche specialist. he said my mechanic did the job correctly with the caveat that the job doesn't always work. he says if his change of o rings doesn't fix it, it is the head gasket or a crack in the block or ......

i am torqueing the bolts that hold the head in a few weeks, and keeping an eye on the coolant tank.

torqueing the bolts will either stop the problem or exacerbate it significantly enough to make a head gasket in immediate issue. i have had this problem for almost three years and 15k miles. if i do nothing, i can probably go a few more years like this since the oil accumulates in the overflow tank. my problem started immediately after i paid a Porsche specialist to change the coolant. two days later the power steering pump cut the lower radiator hose, and the car overheated for a flash. probably should have torqued the head then.

wish i had the silver bullet we need.
