Post Hood emblem replacement

This may be a stupid question, but... I need to replace the Porsche crest hood emblem on my 1984 944 NA. I have the new part, but, how the heck does the old one come out? I can't even see or feel the backside. HELP!!

Cool

i carefully pull mine out the front, some people reach the back, but mine comes out ok through the top.i like to polish them out then reinstall the FACTORY cause i find the replacements have cheap pink stuff where the RED should be, so i stay OE, plus the polished factory ones give a classic look. however, for rock chips, gotta replace that. good luck!

On my car, an '87, the hood crest and gasket has two pins that go through the nose piece. On the back of the pins holding the crest solid there was some hard tar-like substance that was tough as heck. I'm not sure it would have pried off from the front given as tough as this stuff was. What I wound up doing, since I was getting the front end repainted, was remove the nose piece (you can do a search for how to accomplish this), then you can get at the back easily. I had to cut the stuff off the pins with a knife. Then I bought new "nuts" for the emblem. It might sound bad but it would be better than wrecking up the metal on the nose piece trying to pry it off.

When I took my crest off for painting, I just took the whole nose piece out. It is just the four screws on the top when you open the hood. There are two under the rubber when you raise your lights. There are two more, when the lights are up, you can reach them. They are toward the center of the car. You'll find them.

If you don't want to scratch anything, it really isn't that hard to do it this way. The badge backing is easily accessable when the nose is off.

I used an old flat-head screw driver, and hit the end of it with a hammer a couple of times to work it underneath the thing, until I managed to wedge one side of it up. Then I used pliers to bend and wiggle one of the pins up so that I could snap it off...

Just kidding, of course I did use a putty knife though, and gently went around the entire crest... it seemed to pop right off once the whole emblem was raised just a bit.
I bet moving the panel would be "more safe" but if you are careful, then you won't have a problem. Also, did anyone else go totally **** and wax the area (that hadn't been exposed since the mid-80's underneath the crest?

Woo hoo!

Micah,

I cleaned the unexposed spot pretty good. That is when I decided to just paint it and get the rock nicks out instead. Thats pretty bad. I learned my lesson. Just leave it alone!

YES! i routinely remove to wash and wax under the crest. my car has been recently painted, but theres no reason that once your crest is easily removeable you cant keep the paint under there clean and dirt free. happy waxing!

The new hood crest I bought has 2 nuts on the back. It sounds like I may have bought the wrong hood crest.

No, some came with nuts, some with that plastic coating on the pins that hold it on with friction. Guess that "it depends". I don't suppose using the putty knife method on one that had nuts would be a very good idea though...

the way my emblem came off was i was driving down i84 or something at about 80-90 and a piece of rubber came out from under the car in front of me and all i could do was watch it go up.....and hit the front of my car, it hit more on the passanger side of the nose panel thing but the vibration bumped the crest off....i dont really recoment this method cuz there is a big dent in the nose piece now...
