Default 944 => 968 Door handles

== I searched and founds lots of information but want to be clear. I tried looking thru pelicans "pet" program but it is much different now and not at all user friendly ==

So my mother bought 968 door handles (only the bare handles) for her 86 NA and she wants to order the other parts she needs. She called up sunset porsche and apparently they said 190$\ea side for everything but the door handle and tumbler. That sounds WAY expensive.

What parts can be saved from the old door handles> (my question mark key is broken) and what needs to be ordered>

I'm thinking she needs the rosettes, the 4 seals, the funny shaped spring, and possibly the lever itself.

Can the old actuator arm be saved> I know the old key tumblers can be transplanted. Anything else>

TIA
Mike

The key tumbler probably won't fit. When I put a handle from my 85.5 on my 88, the cylinder was incompatible.

My tumbler fit. Sunset is probably going to have the best price. The parts you need are not cheap nor are the old ones compatable.

thanks guys, I love rennlist.
I dug up a post from 2002 by "keith" (I asked where to order the parts.. my mom finally buys them 6 years later lol) with this info:

944.537.611.00 Rosette, Left ($18.00)
944.537.612.00 Rosette, Right ($18.00)
944.537.621.00 Base, L (gasket) ($4.00)
944.537.622.00 Base, R (same) ($4.00)
944.537.631.00 Base, L (small gskt)($2.00)
944.537.632.00 Base, R (small gskt)($2.00)
944.537.671.00 Control Lever, L
944.537.672.00 Control Lever, R
944.537.655.00 (x2) Tension Spring ($1.00)
944.537.243.00 (x2) Clinch Pin ($1.00)

Also, if I were doing it again, I'd get the following, although they are certainly optional - it just saves a lot of disassembly headache:

900.309.041.00 (x2) Pin 2x12mm
999.218.079.02 (x2) Screw M3x5 self-locking

All of this was $55 from sunset porsche.

What wasn't compatible? The lock cylinders are the same. I just went through this last weekend. You'd be surprised how much is the same between the two. If you want to save a couple of bucks, the micro switch can be moved over to the 968 by swapping the lock cylinder housing (they're identical) so you can buy the non-power 968 door lock handles. To change the housing, you just have to drive out one roll pin.

the cylinder from my 88 didn't fit the 85.5 handle- that is, the cylinder physically fit but wouldn't spin .

It sounds like you had the cylinder 180° out. I had an issue with turning the cylinder in the housing too, but once I turned it around, it worked. I also had an issue with the old rubber seals that were cracked apart on the end of the cylinder near the key end was jamming up the mechanism - I just removed them. Now I'm wondering if I should have installed a small diameter O-ring in their place.

All you need to have are the following parts:

-Handle(s)
-Gaskets (for both sides)
-Rose/Rosette (chromed thing)
-Little screws to bolt on those Rose/Rosette into the handles

All other parts can be taken from your old 944 handles. I have done this, so it works. You will need a Dremel or a similar tool to modify 968 handles a little bit if you would like to use 944 handles trigger. I did it that way. My car is a 1988 951.

Expect to spend a VERY long time doing the first side - and then about 20 minutes on the next...

Seems the modification has a very steep learning curve...
