Default Odometer age ?s

Hi

I have had my 84 944 for just under a year now. Apart from a new clutch it has "touch wood" been more reliable then the brand new 07 VW GTI i have as well. Which is great.

However when i bought the car the odomoeter was not working. It read around 29000 So i originally thought that it must have around that amount of miles on it. When I pulled the Carfax it said it had 149000 miles back in 1997 so.... I guess I must have over 250000 miles on the car. Now I have great oil pressure, it pulls really stong and as i say has been really reliable. Could carfax be wrong as a quater million miles seems an awful lot.

Any ideas

with the odo broken, there's no way to know when it was last accurate. It's possible that it got broken when someone tried to roll it back

As tifo says, yes, carfax can be wrong and often is.

All carfax is, is a compilation of what has been reported to state DMVs and other sources (insurance companies, etc). If I bought an '84 944 new, put on 350k miles but never had an accident in it, don't need to smog it (basically, never have to report mileage while I own it), and sell it, I could report the car as having 50k miles when I sell it, and carfax will report 50k miles.

However, your car may not have a quarter million miles.

Let's say it really did have 149,000 last time the car was sold (btw, since your '84 has a 5-digit odo, most states publish this as "exceeds mechanical limits" or sometihing similar), and some moke tried to roll back the odo when the car had 150k miles. the odometer breaks with a 29k reading. You buy the car, put on 20k miles. Car now has 170k miles on it.

Also, having a 250k car with good oil pressure, pulling strong and running reliable just means you have a well-maintained car. Some guys have 350k+ cars, I think one guy had that on an original engine and clutch. the 924/944/951/968 is a grreat car!

(when they aren't breaking)

yeah it did say exceeds mechanical limits.

They are a great car, I love it. Aside from various electrical parts that work sometimes and not others I really have had no problems(again touch wood and praise the lord!!!) . My gti has been back to the shop 5 times this year.

when I was living in Kentucky and got my S2 registered there. Even with the 6 digit since the car had more than 100K it was considered "exceeds Mechanical Limits" I though that was funny as anything with 100K and over(I think is exempt from odo readings in KY)
