My S plus (how much????) for this 951???
My mechanic is selling his 951. He asked me if I wanted to trade my S plus cash.
Here are the specs.....
My 1988 S (Guards Red with black full leather) has 140,000 klms....
New belts, waterpump, timing chain, top cam chain tensioner pad/ramp, thermostat, Intake gasket, Exhaust O rings, Exhaust Flange gaskets, 2 Cam cover bolts, Head gasket, PS belt, Alt belt, 1 new Cam, Dis cap, Rotor, new Magnacore wires, 8 Exhaust valves, 16 Valve seals, 8 Valve guides, 6 Exhaust studs, new stabilzer bushing housing, new BF Goodrich Tour TA's all around, and oil changes every 5000 klms since the re-build.
There are no dash cracks or seat rips. My car was re-painted (don't know when - but it's a great job), but it's still very nice, with only a few rock chips in the front. Absolutely no rust and has only been driven one winter. I'd give the interior a 9.2 (cause the clock still works) and the exterior a 8.7 (rims need to be re-touched). I paid $11,000 Canadian and have put about $6000 into it. Said mechanic did all the work.
He has....
A 1989 951 (Guards Red with full black leather) that has 65,000 klms. It's chipped and was re-painted by a very reputable local shop (Coachwerks) at a cost of $6000. I'd give the exterior a 9.4. He has the same rims as Perry (can't remember the name of them). The car has a rear valance added and sports 285 tires. Interior is just like mine....no cracks or rips anywhere, but the seats seem "firmer"....I'd give his interior a 9.5 He also owns a BMW M5 and had three 911's up until recently. While owning the 911's, the 951 sat for 5 years (driven every once in a while), and he has been driving it the past two summers. Obvioulsy it's in great mechanical shape and I will ask for new belts/water pump before he sells it to me.
The only suspect thing is the fact that the (!) light is on. It's because he replaced the steering wheel with a non-air bag one and now the "AIR BAG" light is also on. This leads me to wonder if the car was ever wrecked (thus the re-paint). The alarm has been disabled due to a stuck tumbler (small fix). Other than that, it needs a good wash.
I took my first drive in this 951 yesterday and was very impressed. The car goes like snot!
So, what should I offer him in cash over and above my S???

If the 951 is as nice as you say, maybe $5K USD plus your S.
I'd start with $3K USD and go from there.
Oh, get an independent PPI on the 951 but you already knew that.

Lucky situation to be in...but you've put more money in that car than his is worth, so you're going be doing what might feel like throwing cash away by upgrading. If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't pay more than 3000 to get the turbo. Also, if it needs a wash, how do you know the paint is good? BTW aren't rear valances stock on 951s? The biggest downside to upgrading however, is that you're going to have to change your rennlist name...have you thought about that? That's a big step.

There was a silver rose 951S (my favourite colour) on sale about 6 months ago in Nova Scotia... I was really tempted by the deal. In the end, I think I'm just going to keep pouring money in the porsche I have now. I know all that's been done to it in terms of maintenance and it's perfect. Heck, if I ever want more power I'll just SC it and that will be it.

Mouse - you are correct sir!! The valance was stock.....don't mind me. The paint is great (it's not that dirty on the outside), but the interior is dirty (it is a mechanics car).
I was just talking to him and he mentioned numbers like $8000 (Canadian) over my car. That is way too much, in my opinion. If I can get it for $4000-5000 over mine, I'd be happy!
...and yes, the name change would be an adventure.

So, what should be the max I should go in cash on this deal????
If I sell my S privately for around $10,000 CND (an S in way worse shape than mine sold for $14,000 here recently), I can turn around and look for a 951 in the $15,000 range - thus I'm looking at an additional $5000, so I figure $5000 is a good number to be offering him. He will most likely sell my car after the trade (and keep his BMW as his toy). I figure he wants the S so he can sell it at a lower price than the 951. He sells cars on his lot, but they are mostly RiceRockets in the $10,000 range, which my S would fit into. The 951 wouldn't sell very fast on his lot.

I guess it would be a fair offer to start with. Do you know how much he wants to sell that 89 turbo for?
If a "S" was sold for 14k, I'd figure a "TS" he'd want at least a few thousands more than that.
Don't forget you already have 17K into your car. As for myself, I stopped counting long ago.

I'm not sure what he wants for the 951 outright. He knows what I paid for my car and did all the work on it, so I figure he is putting a $10,000-15,000 tag on my car and wants around $7000 over that, so he would most likely want between $16,000 and $20,000 for the 951. When I originaly told him I paid $11,000 for my car, he said I got a really good deal, so maybe he thinks it's worth more, and his 951 is worth more than I think he think's it's worth - you know what I'm sayin'??
I will ask him next time I see him. He is in and out of his shop because he recently got Cancer and only works a few hours a day.....he had to goto the States for an operation and hasn't worked full-time in 8-months - thus his need for cash through selling his car. Good news is he is now Cancer-free.

Ask a friend to approach him and get the outright price to buy with cash. If its low, you may want to sell your car first and buy his. Cash always talk louder than trades unless he is coming out ahead on the deal. I like the 951 just because the availability of used replacement parts compared to the S. I would imagine the 951S worth more in the future compared to other models of 944. Get his car checked out to make sure it has not been wrecked.
