Post That thing...you know, behind the steering wheel...how do you tighten it?

The part directly behind the steering wheel (where the wiper/blinker controls are) is loose on my car. There are two screws in this section, but I think they hold the piece together.

Any clue how to tighten this??

the two screws just hold on a trim piece and will do you no good but to remove the trim piece.

There is a bolt on a ring attached to the switch that tightens to the steering collumn much like a hose clamp. This bolt is seemingly impossible to actually get a wrench on, but you MIGHT be able to see it if you get your head under the dash & look up (it's gonna be right behind the steering wheel, so it's way up in there).

Easiest way to get to it I found is to remove the steering wheel (REAL EASY if no airbags, never tried with airbags though), then those two screws to get that trim piece off. Even still it's not easy (impossible with a socket, hard with a wrench).

If taking the steering wheel off intimidates you, you might be able to tighten it from under the dash if you're quite flexible.

I concur: removing the steering wheel is the easiest way to get into that (unless you have airbag).

Oh, I thought you meant the other side of the steering wheel, and I was thinking to myself, "heck, I am wound tight enough already..." lol

If you have a wheel with an airbag, there are two screws on the side that hold the airbag unit to the wheel. Just loosen these two screws(they don't come out) and pull of the front section. Then you can easily get to the nut that holds on the steering wheel. That's how mine is anyways HTH

I don't have airbags, and I did manage to tighten it. Thanks Scootin and others.

A quick steering wheel question.

If someone has removed an airbag steering wheel and replaced it with a non-airbag wheel, how would you go about getting the (!) and "Air Bag" light to come off????

If you have an airbag, be sure to disconnect the battery and let the car sit for a MINIMUM of 30 minutes before you try to remove it. Its basically a small bomb that you are removing, so please take proper precautions.

The 951 I'm looking at has had the airbag steering wheel replaced with a non-airbag wheel and the (!) and "Air Bag" lights are on.

I want to know how to get those lights off......

G96 - thanks for the link.

From reading that page, it seems like you can snip the (!) wires, but then you won't know the status of the car OR you can jump the wires, but that will cause the car to shut down during an accident. I wonder if you can retain the use of the passenger side airbag, not have the (!) light on AND not risk your life?
