Lightbulb Quick bent valve/cam question-Update bent valves identified!

Ok, after the t-belt broke I can barely turn the cams by hand, they DO NOT want to turn. Before I start pulling the cams and head, is it safe to assume that one or more of the valves are bent?

Not necessarilly, mine did not bend when the cam tensioner broke. But Odds are the're are some bent exhaust valves.

There is a lot of weight pushing back up on those cams, but if your belt broke it is pretty safe to assume you bent a valve or two.

Well, I got impatient and started pulling the cams to get the head off. I've got the driven one off, but the one with the belt pulley has one bolt that won't come off. I'm afraid of stripping it out, but I need to get it off to finish removing the head. The bolts that are holding it on are the 6mm hex key kind. Any ideas?

You should put the other bolts back in so it takes some of tension off of the bolt and then break them free in sequence.

Bust out the drill and drill the head of the bolt off. It's unusual to not have to drill at least one of those bolts off.

Put the 6 mm allen on the bolt and hammer it down with a few quick hard hits to break the corrosion lose. Even stripped allens can be hammered down with 3/8 extension to reshape the hex recession. I have gotten most out without ever having to drill. It is not good to have metal shavings in the cam tower for the 8v heads.

I got the bolt off with a little more finesse, nothing broke or drilled. With the cams off I did a compression test and #2 had no pressure. The exhaust valve followers are a little depressed like they can't fully close, but the rest of the valves look normal from the top. Tonight I plan on pulling the head so I can begin repairs, does anyone have two "S" exhaust valves they want to part with?

Glad to hear it is only a bent valve. I'm faced with a busted t-belt on a 944s also. Can you pass on tips on getting it back together and running.
