Air Conditioning intermittent

Air Conditioning intermittent
First post here so please bear with me. I have an '87 Turbo. A/c blows cold up to a month ago. I started hearing a click....seemed to come from the glove box area and after the click the A/C would blow hot. I hear the click again and it's back to cold. Needless to say in Las Vegas when it's 112 I hate the hot part. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

John... I'm an AC amatuer. I haven't changed one before, only read about it here - but it is behind the glove box and I believe it functions as a temperature controllable orifice. As temp changes it is supposed to alter how much freon is allowed to pass through. It could be sticking or maybe a small piece of something is wedged in it. Another theory is that there is enough water in the system that a small bead of ice forms at that orifice and temporarily blocks the freon. Freon blocked, heat rises, Ice melts, freon flows and the cold comes back on.
A good AC guy can fix it in prolly an hour...Bruce

Another possibility is low freon. How's the pressure?
The 944 compressor will cut off if the freon is low to protect the system (the freon carries the oil to lube the parts, so if the freon is low, no lubing and parts seize up)
Like Bruce, I'm a AC amateur
but I read a lot of the stuff here to educate myself while waiting for the next thing to break
When I first started reading Rennlist several years ago, I read a good post with pics about a battery drain issue. last year, I had the same issue and knew exactly where to go for the pics and step by step

I posted this to your same question in the turbo forum.
There's a solenoid for the HVAC behind the glove box. When it fails it clicks and cycles the air box doors both hot and cold. Easy fix. A failed plastic clip on the drivers side console will blow hot all the time and won't cycle.
Check #3 and #2

Im not sure how to fix the problem with them.
For the fans only working on 4, take out the resistor block that is under the plastic firewall cowl. The contacts on these get corroded over time and will cause the fans to only work on the highest setting (no resistance through block). I soaked mine in white vinegar for an hour or two and hit the contacts with fine sandpaper. Before i cleaned it, on very hot days it would always cause problems.

Cool. I just started having the same problem. It looks like to me that if the A/C is blowing cold in general (as mine is), then the first best check is the vacuum lines (cheap!) and then the solenoids as KUHL 951 suggests. That solenoid part number from PET is on illustration 813:25 on the copy I have. It lists the part #'s as:
944 659 215 01 for 87 on
944 659 215 01 for 86 and before
Looks like an easy fix hopefully! Pelican Parts lists it as a custom OEM part for about $75 and $82.50 respectively.
If it was a low pressure out, then it should just go off completly, but it won't click under the dash, just the compressor won't kick on at all. Put the pressure has to be VERY low I've found for it to kick out (especially with 134a, since it has a generally slightly higher pressure than R-12).
Likewise same with the expansion valve, it shouldn't technically make any noise per say. But it WILL mess up the pressures a lot if it's not working right. Hard to test them though.

Seems my PET version is older than yours...lol Thanks for the info. The system is fully charged and runs very cold....til the click...then it is very hot. Todays temp is 112 so I like the cold part. In any case....any chance I could get your copy of PET? Mine has illustration 813:00 and 813:5 but no 813:25. I'm jealous! OOOOps....I found it. I think thats the one. We'll see.... It seems you are half right. 944 659 215 01 is the air valve but 944 659 215 02 is the heater valve and probably the one I need.

I can't seem to remember where I got it (nor does a quick Google search pull it up). It's about 5.2 meg, so too big for e-mail. The file name is 944-2parts.pdf. It seems to cover the S2 versions as well.
You have a skydrive account or something like it where I could post it for you?
No way to PM on here. Are you on the Pelican Parts board too?

Cool! I have the program too, but haven't figure out how to install it on Vista.
Where on the Porsche website do they post their stuff? I've only been able to find the link to their pay service for independent dealers.

I'm not exactly sure. The version I have doesn't say that I can find, but the udpate date was 08.04.2005 update 187.
It looks like the version on the web is newer. 08.25.2006, update 203
