Is it the clutch?--whirring sound off throttle
Report from my brother is that the '84 944 has a 'whirring' mechanical sound off throttle x months. Was told by a friend that it needs a new clutch.
What does this sound like? In need of a complete clutch job?
Thanks to those who have answered my other posts regarding 944 clutch job.
Trying to decide if it's worth having it fixed.

Could be alot of things... Clutch included. We would need more details on when it happens to make a determination. Off throttle? Decel? Clutch in? Clutch out? Neutral? Motor shut off? Etc

I second the guess on LSD as I've heard many accounts of them being fairly noisy. Any difference in the feel of the pedal? My pedal was very stiff and had a binding feel to it the closer it got to the floor.

968 trans have a similar sound when the throttle is lifted and coasting down. Almost all the time it is a pinion bearing. I think the rubber centered disc problem is more of a rattle/vibration than a whirling sound.
