Post AC - Air Conditioner

I have a stock AC system on my 86 944na with a new(used) compressor.

Does anyone know the steps I need to take to charge it with one of the new coolants?

Do I need to change any hardware? (Someone said I needed to get a new dryer or something)

I've heard people talking about the different new coolants available, but I didn't see what was needed in order to USE these new coolants on a stock AC system.

Thanks! <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

You do want to replace the drier,on my 1987-944S it is next to the radiator behind the drivers side headlite. You also want to make sure your replacement compressor has the compatiable oil in it,either PAG or Ester depending on who you talk to,I personally used Ester.Once this is done you have to install R134A fittings onto the old fittings and then have someone pull a vacumn on the system.Once this is done and there are no leaks you can then fill with R134A.Hope this helps.

do I want to? or do I have to?

Anyone have the procedures for adding oil and the procedure for getting a new/different dryer?

Start with the Interdynamics site. They make retro kits for conversion. Yes. You need to have the system evacuated by a qualified shop. Dumping R12 into the air is illegal. Also; using blends adds another unknown into the equation. Many shops will not do future work on a car that has an unknown refrigerant in it. You may or may not require a new drier, but installing one is not difficult. The low pressure side of the system is on the compressor itself. How convenient. To convert to R134a, the fittings will have to be changed out, a 90 degree elbow is required to provide access, filing a small amount from the alternator bracket is required, and a 1/2 inch shorter belt helps in the clearance area. When filing or grinding make absolutely certain the openings of the system are protected from debris.

There have been a number of posts on this subject; I have contributed to some of them; I have converted (3) 944s over the years. Still have my EPA certification, but no longer active in the business.

Good luck

Bob S.
