all or most of jay leno's cars are older than '75 if your car is older than '75 its pre smog, or smog exempt. there are some county's in California that doesn't have smog, but those are the one's that's under populated.

It's not "old", it's "classic".

That's not true if you're into hybrids - in the city of San Francisco, buyers get a $7500 discount from Chevrolet to buy a Volt, and a $2500 discount for any hybrid in California. So, a Volt is $10k cheaper for SF residents, while a used 944 (with its FAR FAR smaller carbon footprint) is driven to extinction with impossibly strict smog tests.

I don't get it, the cars are getting older, not younger, so why are the smog test maximums getting lower? Me keeping my old car on the road is GOOD for the environment! Haha, like the government cares about the environment.

Slightly off-topic question - there's always a (luckily) rare chance I could end up working in California. If I worked there, but kept my residence (and vehicle registration) in another state, I wouldn't have to worry about those smog regulations correct?

That is correct. You may get hassled about it though: You have ten days to change your address if you are moving here. That being said, I know LOADS of people who do exactly that. I would kill for the ability to do that. :-/

I have one of my vehicles registered in Oregon and it's perfectly legal since it spends 50% of it's time up there. Being on the Oregon coast like you makes it a no smog test area also. Once you register any vehicle in Cali you will need to get a Cali DL, Cali insurance, plus give up your Oregon DL. Just keep an active address in Oregon and continue your permanent residential status there (+50% time spent). If you permanently move to Cali eventually they will get you though.

As far as emissions testing and "stars" in AZ; we have collector car status and no smog requirements. To obtain that, you must have a different car as a daily, limited on miles per year, and get special (much cheaper) insurance. My Road Runner had >550 HP, no emissions stuff at all and no inspections. $200.00 yr insurance for company listed value of $35k, and $25 registration. Not allowed to drive during rush hour, no problem!

I'm trying to fix (and or sell) my MR2 so I can use that as a daily and maybe get my 944 set as a classic/collector status.

I've never heard of collector status in CA. I wish!
