California uses the sales price as supplied by the buyer for the tax base.
Yea, in the land of fruits and nuts we have nice air conditioned DMVs with big parking lots and more checkout lines than Walley world. Here in Missouri, the DMV is an old school desk and a poleroid in the back of a furniture store. We wait in line watching the bigscreen that is on sale for that week.

"Is that spelt p-o-r-c-h?"

... just kidding - except about the furniture store and bigscreen...Bruce ;]

Yup, same deal with me. Book said $4500 for poor (or low) condition, so thats what i had to pay tax on. What i paid was significantly less than that.
