Pop sound. From rear?

Pop sound. From rear?
I thought maybe I had a bad ball joint or bushing in the front.
When I jacked up the car I noticed a creak and pop coming from the rear..
it is worst when there is weight on the car and goes away completely when the car is jacked up...
No loose bolts that I can see and the gland nut feels tight.
Lug nuts where torqued to spec....
The only thing that is out of sorts is the new axle.
It seems to be slid all the way to the outside and hitting the outside shaft.
What I mean is that if I grab the axle between the joints it is slid all the way to the outside and is making contact.
If I slide it in and out it hits the outer wheel shaft and makes the sound I keep hearing (I hope). It is a replacement shaft and the CV's are identical on either end.
Could it be installed backwards?
Could the transmission be shifted to one side? (doesn't look like it)
What suggestions do you have from experience?
The beauty is an 87 951 that was lowered (professionally I was told).
I hear the pop the worst when I mash the throttle and the back end squats down and then again as it returns to normal.
I also get it when I go over a speed bump. both when the front wheel goes over and then again when the rear goes over...
It is always on the passenger side and from the cockpit it sounds like it is coming from the middle of the car. But again when I started to lift the front end up I could hear the popping coming from the rear wheel....
Not all the time but enough that I am getting concerned.
Thanks JC
