Post Installed Guard Transmission LSD -- Wow ! Fabulous !

Well, the monster 951 now has a Guard Transmission 50% Limited Slip Differential. I hired Eurowerks in Charlotte to work on the extra transaxle that Ian Klass (thanks Ian) lent me, and they installed the LSD in the box. While there, they freshened up the synchros, bearings, and gaskets. I had all intentions of installing the transaxle tonight with Ian's help in my garage, but Ex-Porsche Master Technician Jim Burton of Eurowerks gave me an offer I couldn't refuse. He said, he knows what it is like to lay under a car and try to get the transxle out so he offered to help install it on his shop lift last night. He essentially wanted to do the whole job himself. The shop had a transmission rig that lifted and tilted about 7 feet up. I was quite impressed with his skill and efficiency. There was no charge but I gave him a good tip.

I've now driven a couple of days with the LSD. Very impressive !! I can now accelerate in corners. I can now rotate the car better to shoot for the apex. The car is faster, since I am not fighting wheel spin all the time. The freshened box is quiet. Before, if I let off my clutch, there was a racket out of the transaxle. Now, there is no more noise when the clutch is engaged or not. My shifter linkage under the boot was found to be excessively worn. I was able to use one of Keith's spare shifters from his parts car-- Thanks Keith !!

For anyone who wants to improve their driving experience, buy one of these Guards LSD's. The quality of the unit was phenomenol. The backlash was perfect after the initial install. Thanks Paul for a top-notch unit.

I can't wait to go to Lowes Motor Speedway December 2 and 3 for the next PCA drivers school. I have to learn how to drive the car at the limit again. Should be fun !!

David,
Two years ago when I had my gearbox built in my first 951 I had a Guard Torque Biasing differential installed and I was amazed at the difference it provided over the factory LSD. I pretty much noticed the same benefits as you did. I paid $1100 for mine from JP Motorsports in CA. ust curious what did yours cost you?

I have been considering this upgrade for some time, I have some questions though.
1)What would the shop time normally be for this job.
2) Are there any other parts required.

Thanks in advance

The clutch type LSDs are more expensive than the torque biasing units. Mine cost $1395. Alot of money, but think of it as a power and handling improvement to the car. Well worth it.

Judging by the work on my car, I would estimate 2-3 hours of shop time to remove and install the transaxle. The rebuild of my transaxle including the installation of the LSD, measurement of back lash, application of shims, new bearings, pulling all the gears and synchros and reassembling was another 6 hours of labor. Total for the parts, two synchros, and two new bearings and the transmission gasket set was $190. Other than needing a couple of spare CV bolts and new lock nuts for the transmission mount, no other parts are required. Hope this helps.
