Default Re-charging Old 944 R12 Air Conditioner

My AC works very slightly and is the old R12 system (1986 NA 944).

I know it cannot be legally recharged with more R12 but has anyone experience in putting in (ie: recharging) more lubricant oil with leak stopper to take up the space left by the missing R12?

Is there a brand name of the oil?

Secondly: has anyone tried adding a bit of Propane? I understand those molecules are larger and will even stop the tiny leaks. It sounds a bit dangerous to me.

I do not think it is illeagal to recharge the old system,it is just expensive!
Have leak check done and if there are no major (repairable) leaks, just
fill`er up.

It is LEGAL to recharge your system with R12. Buy some on eBay, get you some hoses, and go to town.

I forgot to mention I live in Canada. No R12 recharging allowed here.

no you can't add oil to make up for the loss and yes propane would work but is VERY bad mojo!!

seriously, take it in and have it converted. couple hundred $$ and everything works great!

I've used this stuff for the last couple of years in my old unconverted R12 system and had icy cold AC

I actually still have a few cans of R12 in the basement (from a decade or two ago, when they went on sale for 99 cents a can) but I don't like using it because I feel a little guilty when some of it leaks out.

edit: oops, a link would be nice

http://www.foxtoolsupply.com/

edit: Oh yeah, no affiliation, use at your own risk, etc

You can buy the Duracool recharge kits from Lordco (search "duracool" for more info).

Or, you can buy Red Tek 12a Refrigerant (R12 replacement) from Canadian Tire.

The Duracool kit is better because it comes with adapters and a hose so it's everything you need to fill the system.

it is illegal to recharge r12 if you're not certified and you can't buy it without the certification in the us.

yeah, yeah, certification is ez.
i just find it easier to take it to a shop and pay the price.

I have used 414b with excellent results.

I would just try to find a place to buy it in Canada.

Get the Crappy Tire stuff...its DIY friendly and reasonably priced. Make sure you get the European fittings too.
