1) timing belt, balance shaft belt, waterpump
2) motor mounts
3) clutch

Make sure that any car you buy comes with maintenance records. I ended up replacing all three of these when I bought my car, only to find out that they had recently been done. It was not cheap....

For more detailed answers do a search of the archives (by clicking search in the top right hand side of the page)

This is a very common question

The timing belt, the timing belt, and the timing belt, Oh yeah, did I mention the timing belt?

Seriously, do a search here on 'timing belt' and you'll see what I mean. There are a few other issues: motor mounts, sunroof gears, corrosion under the battery, etc., but the belts are the biggie.

What about the power steering, is it common for there to be some evidence of fluid near the pass side sway bar?

Sunroof gears (stripped)
Sunroof microswitches (dirty/out of alignment)
Relays (dirty contacts/cold solder joints)
Ground lugs (dirty/corroded)
Odometer gears (cracked)
Power steering hoses (leaky)
Power window/seat switches (dirty)
Power lock actuators (blown)
Hatch releases (out of adjustment/broken joints)
Shift lever pins (worn)
Antenna boosters (disconnected)

I've experienced all of these except the odometer... but these are just minor annoyances compared to the aforementioned belts and clutch!

Check the tie-rod ends and steering rack boots as well.

If there is fluid leaking out of the boots, get ready for steering rack replacement in the near future.

If there's mixing of the coolant with the oil, then you need gaskets, gaskets, gaskets! (Milkshake looking substance in the coolant res. or on the dipstick)
