I'd definitely recommend a Becker cdr220, just recently got one and I'm very pleased with the results. Looks perfectly stock, and plays well.

I bought a BP to replace the original in my '83. The new one lasted 13 months (1 month after the warranty expired) before it died. Enough said.

I suggest you get whatever you like and can afford. Keep the original and swap it out anytime you feel the 944 ought to look original.
