95 M3 vs 968 vs my S2
#16
Hey Tom:
I've owned all three and agree with smokie about just putting an LSD in the S2. I loved the M3 and 968 as street cars and love my S2 race car too.
My thoughts in no particular order:
-The 968 isn't going to feel much/any faster than your S2
-If you're only going to do local DE's and want a similar but faster car, look for a used turbo. Everything NA feels anemic here. My formerly more than adequate 6.0l tow vehicle can barely accelerate from the speed limit going north on 25 (towing the trailer).
-As a daily driver, I love both the M3 and 968. 968 better for highway cruising with the tall 6th gear, would probably prefer the M3 in town.
-Not that your friend won't get high teens for his M3, but I think if you're going to drive it, the depreciation potential on that car is much higher than a mid-mileage S2 or 968.
-Without the seats, bar, and suspension, I think $10k would be very optimistic for your car.
-If you put the LSD in the S2 and later decide to sell, it will be pretty desirable to a Club Racer. There are many more S2's racing than 968's and I suspect E36 M3's.
-The 968 is about 5% heavier than the S2 with the same suspension, wheels, brakes, etc. I don't think the net difference in speed will be enough to make you happy about the incremental cost. IMO, if it had LSD and you replaced the DMF with a LWF, it would be a noticeable difference.
-I sold my 89k 968 for about $13.5k 6 years ago with a fresh clutch and good tires! It is currently listed for sale on the PCA website by the guy I sold it to for $13,900. He has added a set of 17" wheels, MO30 sways/shocks, and about 40k miles. His ad # is 18700.
Are you going to Pueblo this weekend? I'm planning to be there on Saturday.

Don't know if I'll drive or ride down. The car is a blue 996 with Aerokit, the bike is a blue/silver/black BMW. The bike is our only vehicle that doesn't feel slow here. I guess even a 15% loss from 167hp at something like 540lbs is still pretty good Both the bike and car still have MO plates as I haven't been in Denver long enough to establish residency yet.
I'm coming down to meet Alan Fritze. He reasonably wanted me to meet with him and do a ride-around the track before allowing me to instruct. Assuming Alan is ok on it, I'd love to ride/drive with you in the afternoon.
See you there,

See you there,
whether you are my instructor or not, if you want you can take my car in the instructor/black whatever they call it here sessions. I will ride with you for maybe one or two sessions to learn.... that should cut the red tape.
i too havent been in denver long enough to establish residency. that's my story and im sticking to it.
