What years/models had limited slip differential originally and how do you identify the transmissions?

Clutch-type limited slip was available as an option on all years and models of 944s. I think that only the 1988 951S/1989-1991 951 got LSD as standard equipment.

Two ways of determining if a transmission has limited slip: code engraved on top of bell housing, or spin the output shafts. The shop manual gives the codes for various transmissions with or without LSD. For example, 1982-1985 016K transmissions had code numbers tarting with QM without LSD and 8Q with LSD. 1985.5-1987 US 016K transmissions started with 5S standard or 7V with LSD. Later transmissions had four different codes, depending if it was standard, had LSD, had external oil cooler, or both. If you can get the code number off of top of bell housing, I'll look it up for you.

Second (easier) way is to jack up both wheels and spin one (or spin one output shaft if transmission is out of the car.) If the other wheel/output shaft turns in the opposite direction, no LSD. Same direction, LSD.

EDIT: Third way, option code sticker (if transmission in car is original):
220 Limited slip differential
414 external transmission oil cooler

Thank you very much, I'm using the 016 trans in a GT40 and didn't really want to spend the $1200 for the Quaife diff.
