Post Do your windows go up/down w/o the key?

On my Euro spec 951, the power windows go up and down regardless of whether the key is in the ignition switch or not. In my U.S. spec 944S2, no can do.

Since my 951 is a late car (1991), was this something they added later, or do all U.S. spec 944 power windows only work with with the key, like my S2?

I guess it's a Euro spec feature, then. Pretty convenient, when getting out of the car. Thanks!

Mine work without the key if I just turned the car off and haven't opened the doors.

Luis , my windows roll down without the key in the ignition too.

I also thought that this was a funny incident, but with bigger fish to fry on my 951, never worried to much about it.

All 944 windows should operate without the key...

Here's the scoop. When in the car, and you turn the ignition off, until you OPEN the door (any door) the windows should operate.

If they operate AFTER you open the door, chances are there's an issue with the door closed switch on that side - or the other side.

Once the door is open - the windows should stop working immediately.

A good test is to start rolling down the window, and open the door as you're doing it. If the window stops - then you're fine. If it continues going down as the door opens, there's an issue.

HTH!

Do the keys need to be still in the ignition?

Yeah, what Jay said. The door plunger switch can get corroded pretty easily, and when it does, theres good chance you are draining your battery rather quickly.

Search the archives, as we had a couple of posts on this about 6 months ago.

Window goes up and down with key. Take the key out and it still works. Open a door and they no longer work without the key.

There is a relay that controls this feature in the fusebox - #G7 - it gets pretty hot to the touch.
