Post wheel minority - STAND UP!! BE HEARD!!

Am I the only one here with a soft spot for Cookie-Cutters and Phone-Dials? I know they're not available in bigger sizes (yet, heh heh heh) but if they were...would anyone else be interested?? Go to hell, I am NOT a crackpot!!

Phone dials can be kinda cool, if they are really clean and there are bright red calipers behind them. The main problem I think is they make the wheel look narrower than it really is.

I've never been into cookie cutters.

I had my Phone Dials stripped and refinished! The PO had 'cleaned' them with some nasty acidic crap! After that I did the painted centers. I still like them! Wish they were 17" though!

I really like the flat-faced "manhole covers" on 928s and some 951s. Don't know why.

Manhole covers & Porsches....reminds me of the story about 962s on a road course somewhere in the US (Detroit?); created so much downforce that one sucked up a manhole cover while passing over it!

Anyone who has a soft spot for the cookie cutter looks is usually smarter than that, and has a soft spot for fuchs. (like me)

Since the fuchs are stronger, lighter, and at least available in 16" if you want to spend the $ on them.

And they look a little better than the cookies.

Phone dials in 16" can be nice with the right finish. I do NOT like them polished.

Factory sliver or an anthracite work nice.

Cookie Cutters??? I like them cause they are CHEAP TRACK WHEELS!!!!

I Guess they look alright on my track car...
..but then again with paint like this..

I think most Porsche rims have the potential to look good on a car (with the possible exception of those terrible basket weave BBS style rims)

Another board member, Tim, has removed the paint and polished the outer rim on his cookie cutters and they look pretty nice on his '83

---------------------------------------

(there was an image here)

Here's his car with the rims on:

(and here)

Hope I didn't do anything wrong..they are coming up as dead links now. Sorry Tim if I did...I was just showing your rims 'cause I thought they were well done.

---------------------------------

My car is the same color and the PO already replaced the wheels with Fuchs.. I'm looking for a set of cookie cutters or phone dials though to use on my winter tires.

Yes, I love late offset turbo phone dials on the 944. I'm finishing up a set right now for use this spring.

Plain-Jane 944s can really be slowed down a lot by big wheels and tires. They just don't have the power to haul around big steamroller sized wheels. I've tried wide 16" BBS wheels, and the difference was amazing. The car was a total slug. I shudder to think what 17" or 18" would do. It's not only the weight, but the width of the tread and the sidewall contour that have a major impact on rolling resistance and tire efficiency.

I'm going to use the 7 and 8 by 16 turbo phone dials not only for their look on the 944, but also the compromise between handling and size/weight. The 205/55 and 225/50 tires should still be small enough to not bog the car down.

To be honest, depending on how the turbo phones work out, I'm toying with the idea of going back to stock 15x7 phone dials and some sort of light high performance tire for summer use. I get better ride quality, better gas mileage, and a quicker car. I may give up a little in total mechanical cornering grip, but if it means a more entertaining driving experience, I don't care. Hell, the average minivan today can walk away from a plain-jane 944, so I'm not in it to be the king of the road. I drive it to enjoy myself.

And 15x7 phones are basically free.

While the imfamous Sauber 'Silver Bullets' were leading, a Porsche sucked up one of the manhole covers on one of the back straights, crashed and burst into flames (no injures). Needless to say, they did some modifications to the track afterwards...

Getting back on topic... Phone dials are not my style especially on 924, except I saw a balck 944 with some nice, deep, polished phone dials that looked nice.

This increases inertia of the wheels, therefore more torque is required to 'move/rotate' the wheels and get the car rolling.

924Superwagen--I think you're right, my memory was a bit fuzzy. Didn't mean to confuse Montreal with Detroit!!! This was back in '90 IIRC. The manhole cover sliced open the fuel tank. Yikes!

Anyway--never had a problem with the phone dials. I've seen Steve's refinished PDs and they looked fantastic. Love the Fuchs. Not a big fan of the cookie cutters.

Aaaaand I also forgot to mention that performance tires in 15" are super cheap! There's not a huge selection, but you can get nice tires for under $100 each.

Try that with your 18" wheels!

No you are not the only one... I love the cookie cutters on my car and I would not mind having phone dials.

At the Ventura autofest swapmeet some guy had what appeared to be ten inch wide cookie cutters! I had to stop and think about those for awhile(sure would look sweet on the back of my baby) but talked myself out of it.

STOCK PORSCHE WHEELS RULE!
