My Dunlop Sport A2's (235/60 and 225/60) 15's were a whopping $242 SHIPPED from Tire Rack for all 4

The rears were $58 and the fronts were $53

btw.. they actually work great in the snow too.. this is the third car I've put these tires on. Great combination of dry and wet performance. They are not 'ultra' high performance tires, but for daily 'spirited' driving back and forth to work..they are awesome!

Yea, I have to admit the tire prices for my 15" Phones were incredibly affordable!! I was torn between the Dunlops and the BFG Comp-TA's...went with a local guy with the Comps for $232 mounted and balanced!

I prefer Fuchs of course, but #2 would have to be cookie cutters. Too bad they never made 16" CCs. Phonedials, OTOH just don't do it for me, it must be my age but a tire filled with silver or chrome (or polished) brings back memories of 1950s/60s/70s hubcaps, just way too dated.

BTW, I have ALL 3, Snows on my stock 15" PDs, RE-730s on 16" Fuchs and I recently picked up a set of CCs to put AutoX tires on!

When I bought my navy blue '88 na in '93, I _hated_ the stock PD's... looked for an alternative, but choices & my budget were limited. So I sanded 'em & Krylon'ed 'em as close to the factory silver as I couold get, and never disliked them afterwards. even after budget wasn't an issue, I never even looked for alternatives.

My favorite stock wheel for a 944 is still the Fuchs, second is the cookie cutter, both with black centers & polished rims. Next is the humble PD, especially in the early-offset 16".

For reasons of practicality, I'm running the stock 16" rims on the 968. The car came with a horrible-looking set of 18" MM Cup repro's, which reside in the basement. I'll probably put 'em up for sale next year, about the time people are getting their tax refunds...

Here's my take...

When you've got Cookie Cutters you want Phone Dials.

When you've got Phone Dials you want C2's or 993.

Typical i-wana syndrome!

Now that I've got 993's I'm satisfied - till the next greatest thing comes along anyway!

I'm not giving up my Fuchs, they're the end of the line! I don't care what the snows are on, a second set of Fuchs or a set of Fikses would be nice instead of the CCs for autox wheels!

I like Club Sports a lot- I just wish they made them in 17"- looks-wise, I like the 17" C2's about even w/CS- too bad they're heavier. My favorites are 18" Hollow Spokes- I don't like the Boxster twists nearly as much- HS (even if not hollow) look a lot better IMO. Unfortunately, they're even a tad heavier than 17" C2's. I'll probably get 993's eventually, as they're actually lighter than stock 16" CS's. To answer the question- I like phone dials just fine- I think a well taken care of set, nicely polished, etc, looks great. The cookie cutters are okay on certain cars/colors, but I'm not QUITE as attracted to them. I think Porsche did a really good job matching wheels to cars, as far as looks go- I don't think any aftermarket wheel looks quite as good as some of the factory originals on a 944 series car- the only thing Porsche could have done better in this area, IMO, is better sizing...

I wasn't too hip on the Phone dails that I saw on other cars...Until, I bought my car in this Kalahari Biege Metallic color. It looks very appealing to me now!

Thought twice about upgrading to C2's. My bank account won't allow it... I think I'll keep my 16" phone dials I'll try to polish them, though

I have pd's and I like them because they're light and strong. On the track, strong is important. I don't understand the concern about weight, however. I stand to be corrected, but by my calculation, 5 lbs of added weight per wheel affects acceleration on a 3,000 lb car by about 0.4 %, which is not measurable in any practical situation. This would be about 1.2 foot-pounds on a car with 300 ft-lbs of torque. Am I missing something?

I've never heard anyone call the phonedials "strong." I guess they might be compared to say... an aluminum can, but as porsche wheels go, I always thought they were the bottom of the barrel as far as weight and strength.

As for weight, the actual weight compared to the whole of the car doesn't matter, but the wheels are unsprung weight, which affects handling quite a bit PLUS, they are part of the drivetrain, so they're actually getting turned, so every pound counts quite a bit.

I've actually read that PDs are surprisingly light, the same 18.5/20 in 16x7/8 as sewer lids. Don't know anything about their strength.

Phone dials look best on 944's. They look ridiculous on 911's. Sewer lids look best on 928's, but Club Sports look better on them.

I like basketweaves, but they need to be deep-offset to look their best.

Fuchs' looks, I could take 'em or leave 'em. I'm not a fan of cookies.
