Post 951 Euro driving lights.... sources?

Ok, simple enough - right? Sure... Pelican and thepartsbin.com list them as NLA (No Longer Available)... Paragon has them at $155/each - they don't exist on Ebay (current or expired auctions) that I can find. I can't believe that Paragon is the only place holding onto these things (or that they cost so much in the first place).

I could handle $200, but going above that and I'll just keep my 'frosted' nightlights (that's what they remind me of). $300 is a Guru chip kit.. Koni yellows (and a ****load of other things that would actually improve the car)...

Thanks anyway....

Remember you have to still buy 4 bulbs and all the wiring related parts for the driving side so don't go too crazy if you get into a bidding war since you are getting close to the "average" good price.

I was also told that Bosch sold off their lighting business so they don't make these lenses anymore, though the mold may still say Bosch. This event may explain all the varying prices and the "No Longer Available" as the supply channels get adjusted.

Another thing to keep in mind is I have never seen these lenses used on another vehicle. If the new owners decide the volume is too small to bother with we will be screwed on replacement and the astronomy lens polishing kits may become another unique item in our 944 repair kits. To make matters worse, neither Bosch or Porsche ever bothered to get the driving side light blessed for USA so they are illegal/off road only status. This is why Porsche dealers in USA won't sell the lens with a functional driving side.

Pretty much, I figgure that I've placed my max bid - if someone wants them more, I'll just contact the company directly and see what they want for them without the hassle of ebay (I usually try this route first - but couldn't find the lenses listed on their page last night).

I knew I still needed lights - was actually planning on hitting you up again Dan. I know you can get the bulbs, and I figgured you'd be able to get or direct me to 2 more H3 sockets with some informative bits on how I'd want to wire things.

As I've now slept and have thought about it a little - I won't be to aweful dissapointed if someone else wins this auction. I have fuel lines, and a few other items on the list that should be taking priority.

I'm being sucked into Porschecessorizing!

He, he .... yeah I can help with the bulbs and wiring ideas. You want to burn 100 watt in the driving side and stick with 55 watt in fog. You can probably just use your old fog 55 watt H3s until they burn out and save a couple bucks. The H3s don't need a special socket, just a normal 1/4" female spade connector should do the trick fine.

Keep the old lenses if you have room to store. Then if they quit making these in the future and you crack a new lens you can do the polishing routine on the old lens and transfer the driving reflector to it.

FYI figure another $50 or so for a used fog light switch (goes in the blank spot to the left of orig fog switch) wire, relay, bulbs, etc.

And also, ask anyone who has added these and I think they'll agree this is a VERY worthwhile mod. Without affecting your headlights you will now have access to some serious firepower for situations that call for it .

Also, to protect the new lens, you might want to get a set of those clear protection skins (also on ebay 20-30 dollars or so.

Question

I have heard that if you utilize high wattage bulbs like the 55/100 for the headlights or 100 for the driving light modification, one must install some other electrical components to handle the higher power draw. Does anyone know what these components are and how they're installed?

Yes, you want to use a relay. And heavier wiring to the bulbs with power to drive off the battery or better yet, directly off the alternator.

12 gauge positive wire down to the bulbs is probably fine though I use 10 gauge so there isn't any voltage drop. You also need some inline fuses, connectors, etc. And don't forget improving your grounding as you probably lose an easy 3/4 volt there.

The reason for the heavy duty approach is two fold: first, you don't want to destroy your wimpy stock components, or worse, start the car on fire from the current draw. Second, light output will vary at the 3.4th power to voltage change so you don't want your voltage leaking out as resistance heat. That means better ways to deliver the juice. If your voltage to the bulb under load drops to 11.5 volts, you have lost almost 50% of the design light output. Sort of makes moving up to 100 watt bulbs a waste of time if you don't address the problem.

With the headlight upgrade package I sell guys are getting a 450% increase in lighting output vis-a-vis the stock headlights so there is a lot room for improvement. And then there is E-Code lens focus which puts all that light to work better.

Peckster reported he found the driving/fog lights for about $80 a copy so I sort of forgot about it since that seemed like a pretty good price.

It sounds like I am going to get my arm twisted into working with Brian on cooking up a wiring solution so one can run the 100 watt driving side lights.

He also has my headlight harness which has the spare power feed for an upgrade like this. I am not sure what I would do for other guys that don't have the main harness upgrade. I'll make something up or supply the parts as 100 watt in the driving side is a killer light output as noted. 3600 lumens per bulb with my car. That is same as the highest output HID arc light level. Combined with the 90/100 headlighs, believe me, you can rock the night.

So, let me work with Brian on the wiring solution and I will start again on looking for a good supply of the lenses.

LOL.. seesh, make me sound like the bad guy here.

As for setting everything up, yup - I was going to run another switch in the blank just to the left of the fog light switch and I might consider the 3M headlight covering (though I'm not to sure how well it'd perform with the heat that 100w bulbs would be generating).

As for the needs of this stuff? Uhhh.. well, I had reason to flash someone (from behind) they other night (I have stock sealed beams with just a wiring upgrade) - the interior of the poor car Lit Up brighter than most anything I can think of for comparison. Poor schmoe didn't know what he was getting himself into when he cut me off/tried to remove my bumper (lol, I'm bad - but I DID turn them off... just after I watched him adjust all 3 of his mirrors).

There's still a few days before the auction even ends...

Brian, This 3M stick on plastic has come up before in conjunction with the driving lights with 100 watt bulbs.

Some vendors claim you can't run 100 watt bulbs due to heat but that is not true. I have run them for over 10 years with no problem as have many others. But that lens sits in a closed pocket with a fiberglass(?) housing. The only cooling it gets is the glass lens face and heat wicking back down the copper wiring.

So I would be concerned about the stick on plastic insulating the lens face too much as well as the adhesive being able to hang on. If you try this I'd do just one lens for starters so if it goes haywire you only foul up one lens.
