ok when im in 4th, or any gear and turn the wheel with both wheels off the ground this shaft turns. should i try it with one wheel on the ground or does it matter?

so does that mean clutch is bad.

if you are in gear and the axel is turning and you are NOT depressing the clutch pedal then it must be the clutch thats bad, how else could the axel turn whitout turning the engine. The exact same thing happend to my S2. BTW did the drive line have lash in it before it broke?

The input shaft will turn witht the trans in gear WHEN the center section of the clutch is blown out.

The input shaft will NOT turn if the ring and pinion locks up due to missing teeth.

You are going to replace the clutch.

Cheaper than having the trans rebuilt.

OK Cass,
You have the inspection cover on the front of the tranny open. The thing you see in there is the trans input shaft. With one wheel only off the ground and the trans in gear have someone turn the wheel that is off the ground while you watch the input shaft. If the input shaft is turning the clutch is blown. If not then the trans or r&p is busted. At least you'll know for certain what to fix. Let us know what you find.

yep, i tried it with both wheels off the ground, one wheel on the ground, the other wheel only on the ground, out of gear, in every gear, whenever its in gear the shaft turns. so form all the responses ive gotten it looks like its the clutch. but right now its 12:10 andi have school tomarrow so after i finish my second pizza for today im going to bed.

Take the trans out of gear and reach up inside the inspection hole and turn the input shaft by hand. If this turns even a quarter of the way around it's the clutch.

Of course you could be really lucky and fraged both.
