Ditto, Dano. If you're hearing a grinding with the car in gear and the clutch out I'll bet you blew the ring & pinion. This would also possibly explain the clunking on shifts. Also compounded by the hard shift. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

If you remove the trans fluid drain plug and see lots of metal bits...its your R&P.

The R&P lives inside your transmission, so basically you're looking at replacing your trans with a used unit or having the current one rebuilt. I believe replacing with used is much cheaper.
Figure $600-$1000 for the trans and about 4-5hrs laber (by a pro...longer if done by yourself for the first time) to remove and reinstall.

Yes thats right.

I believe this also douuble confirms that your CV's are ok?

I'm not sure if that fact confirms/denies the thought that the R&P is toast. (Ring and pinion) Though I believe it doesn't do either (confirm or deny).

Woohoo...party likes its your 1999th post...by doing an essay (for school)...

To check the ring and pinion; jack up one of the rear wheels leaving the other on the ground.

Take the trans out of gear -- put it in neutral.

Turn the raised wheel by hand.

This will drive the ring against the pinion which is part of the main shaft through the gear clusters in the transmission.

You should feel a very smooth action. No sudden stops or clunks.

Now put the car in 4th gear and turn the wheel.

IF the ring and pinion are good AND the clutch disk has NOT blown out the rubber center, you should NOT be able to turn the wheel more than a inch or so either way.

IF the ring and pinion are damaged you may get some rotation coupled with clunks and lock ups.

IF the clutch center has blown out the rotation will be quite smooth.

In both cases you need to look through the large inspection hole at the front of the trans where the torque tube/drive line connects to the input shaft of the transmission.

With the trans in a forward gear and one rear wheel on the ground; turning the other wheel should rotate the drive shaft. IF the drive shaft rotates under these conditions then replace the clutch.

the problem is clearly your GLF sensor. it wasn't working and allowed a GLF (gay left foot) to develop. big trouble there. nah anyways i hope your trans aint screwed dude.. rich said they found a guy with a tig welder to fix that frame crack and that they were gonna do the timing belts like yesterday so i should be rollin soon..but then again with my luck, it's probably gonna roll off the tow on the way back to my house and explode or something. right then i guess i'll give you a call later on dude.
peace
ian

ps.. if my car gets running before yours.. the revenge for three months of jokes about how my engine doesn't work will be brutal. so very brutal. you'd probably cry, so get that thing fixed, soon.

another ps- i got my cargo cover and they sent me a nice *** leather sunroof bag too, i didn't even pay for one but whatever i'll take it.. thing is the right side cargo cover mount is missing, so i might need to borrow yours and make a plaster cast copy and paint it black. high-end ghetto rigging, yay.

ok i opened that hole on the front of the transmission. everyhting looks nice in there. nothing hanging or broken that i see. i trid to take a pic but my camera skills must suck becaus ei barely got it in the picture.

but ok, when i have one wheel on the ground:
in neutral the wheel spins nice ans smooth.
but when it is in gear it gets harder to turn the lower the gear. in 1st i can tunr it freely but it seems like its cought in some spots and a clunky gringing sound comes from the transmission area. it does it in every gear just not as much the higher i go.

while i was under my car (literally) my girlfriend called me and said she had already found someone that would do my transmission for me real cheap because hes a friend to the family or something. awesome, isnt she. heh well i guess frow what was in that last post it is my r & p? from the fact that the wheel gets harder to turn would be a sign that my clutch is still working right? thanks guys

Cass put it in 4th turn the wheel and look at the axel in your pix, if it turns with the wheel its your clutch (rubber hub). If it is not turning its your r&p.
hope this helps

Well, Buddy, the bad news is your description indicates it is definitely in the tranny although the symtoms are curious. The good news is someone is going to hook you up cheap. Relatively speaking, used gearboxes are cheap. They are also easy to install. Usually takes 2-4 hours for a novice to complete with fairly basic tools. Buying new replacement parts are quite expensive however. Check ebay for used trannys.
