MAF problem?

MAF problem?
I'm working on an '83 944 (my sons)...
It idles terrible. The plugs look good, wires are new, etc., it runs ok above idle.
Someone in the past removed the top off of the MAF, I assume that is because they were trying to solve some problem or another. What are folks thoughts on replacing it with a rebuilt unit just so I can start from some known good starting point rather than trying to tune around this one?
I have tried to bump the idle speed up with the throttle stop screw, but before it's warmed up, it will still drop down to a really low idle (stay at maybe 400 for a while) and then sometimes die.
Thoughts?

Call it an AFM(Air Flow Meter), you'll get more responses.
Throwing money at the problem will only make one thing disappear for sure.... Your bank account. You could try picking up a used 'known good' AFM from someone parting out a car, it would be a heck of a lot cheaper than a rebuilt unit, so if the problem is still there, you aren't out as much cash.
I actually replaced my DME and AFM with 86+ units, on my '83. The side effect of this was the elimination of the 'shudder'. The car ran much better afterwards, and I got a deal on the parts used.
Try looking at the classifieds over on Pelican, there are usually a ton more cars being parted there, so you should be able to find a deal if you do want to try a different AFM.

I have a good working AFM from an 83 944 that I parted last year after a wreck. I will also include the throttle body and throttle position switch, also good. Yours for $50 shipped if you want them.
