Post BLF:(Bad Luck Fund): April 2002 (First Month)

Hello people. This is going to be the "official" thread for the first months running of the BLF (Bad Luck Fund, BLF as it will be known as from now on). I'm not going to go through all the rules again from the other thread, we will just play it by ear, but it should be as simple as possible to prevent us all from killing each other for the BLF prize.

Here is how this is going to work.
If you want to be eligible for this months prize just post a story about your bad luck in this thread. Whatever you feel is going to be considered bad luck by the rest of the rennlisters. By posting a story you are automatically a BLF player/member and if you do not win the prize this month you will be expected to donate $5.00US to the BLF winner.
If you want to be eligible for future months prizes but don't have any bad luck this month, just post a message saying that you would like to participate in the BLF, and will be voting. For this first month, only BLF members and posters of stories (also members) will be allowed to vote. Later on I think we will be able to allow anyone to vote, but we can vote on that later.

So, thats it. Post a story or post that you want in on the BLF.
Today is April 18th, 2002. Lets post stories and membership status until Saturday, April 27th, 2002, 11:59PM EST. Voting will be from that time till Wednesday, May 1st, 2002, 11:59PM EST. After that, we tally it up, whoever has the most votes from members wins. All members send the winner the prize by the method of the winners choice. The winner then posts a message by Wednesday, May 16th, 2002, 11:59PM EST stating who payed up, all those who payed can play the next month and a new thread will have already been started on May 1st for the month of May, and there will be more time for posting stories next time.

Have Fun. Hope this works out.

Ok, I'll bite...

Well, this month all started out when I noticed that my sway bar bushings where bad...I ordered the bushings from Paragon. While I was ordering them I thought I would order some tie-rods. So I wait for the shipment and it arrives and I notice that the tie-rods look just like ball-joints. Apparently I some how ordered ball-joints instead. Jason says no biggy, send them back and he'll give me credit. Well, I still haven't sent them back, probably will be too late now. The following saturday I take the belly pan off to get to the sway bar when I found this: Yup, thats the bracket that is supposed to be holding the sway bar. Busted!

Well, I couldn't do that now so I have to order two brackets. While I was under the car I found this: Yeah, thats a coolant leak coming from somewhere. The radiator is less than two years old so it better not be coming from their. I also found one of the many sources of my oil leaks:

Another thing, my car, when in the city or slow traffic is boarder line to overheating.

The worst part is, all these problems mean that I can't drive my baby to Hershey and park with the rest of the Porsches, I will have to take my brothers suburban.

Vote for ME <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Thanks Tim. Just want to say something before people start making comments. Some people, like Tim, might post stories that are not from this last month.. but are from the last few months, ongoing problems they are still dealing with. For this first month I don't believe there should be a problem with that. Just know that posting a problem twice, monther after month is a no no. That is all. Let's hear some more cases of bad luck.

I am in as a voter this month, but will be happy to pay the winner. We all know my story, so it is excluded from the BLF.

I am sure, however, knowing my luck, I will win this bitch at some point between now and when the car is back on the road.

"Hmm... what is that box of parts from...." will proably be the title of my post.

And Tim.. I have seen that site before. Get it all cleaned up BEFORE you start work. Makes it a much more pleasing job.

Cool

Perry,
After reading your story on your web site( and wiping the tears from my eyes), I tend to agree with you. You are a lock to eventually win this thing. I would have pushed it off a cliff, reported it stolen, taken the insurance money, got very drunk, and bought a nice boring Accord.

Anyways, I'm only about 45 minutes north of you, if you need someone to hold a trouble light or something I'd be honored. When it runs (and it will) c'mon up here and I'll buy you a beer or three.

Pete...85.5 that miraculously hasn't blown up or caught fire..

I don't think I can compare with Perry, but here is my story...

Back in December I started overheating. I began spewing coolant from the overflow.

I tried EVERYTHING that people said to try on here, and after replacing 2 radiators (finally getting a brand new one) it still overheated.

Replaced both fans with fans from Partsheaven. Now the fans don't shut off.

Replaced fan switch twice, radiator cap once, then I broke the new one on accident.

Replaced all hoses.

Still overheated.

Towed down to Tony's. They say it's the water pump. They replace that and timing belt.

I get car back, SHAKES like crazy. Massive vibration. Return the next day (an hour drive back DOWN to Wilmington) and they check it out. They say it's the motor mounts - WHICH incidently were PERFECTLY fine when I took the car in. But what the heck can you do? So the bill was already $800 for all the previous work they did, and now another $300 for motor mounts. After calling twice they say they fixed it but one of the studs on the mount broke and they had to order another one. Haven't heard back from them, but I will be calling tomorrow.

Not to mention that they broke my driver side door lock thingy (the thing with the blinking red light) off, and didn't fess up. And my door ajar beeper doesn't work. We told them to fix both so we shall see if they do or not. And if they do, HOW they go about doing so.

Also, I'm still pissed about the motor mounts COINCEDENTALLY going bad after they have the car up - that really gets to me. That just doesn't make any sense. But there is really nothing I can do. So I'm out 300 more bucks.

SO, to summarize, I've driven my car ones since December 10th or so. The above is a summary of what's been going on. Just a summary.

-Matt

Deal. You drive it first, then I might be buying you a laxative while I drink a cold one.

I would like to add to my bad luck...

Today on my way home from school some ladie pulled out of a blind intersection and hit my left rear fender. It isn't real bad but its the fact the I have to go through all the hassle and my paint is already messed up so my car will looked mis matched worse than it already is.

This is past bad luck and its already paid for and done (with a really sweet '89 turbo to replace ...) After a complete rebuild of my '86 turbo that lost #2 rod bearing on the track, that took about a year with all the delays and upgrades... six weeks later a drunk driver crashes into it while it was parked ...totaling it!! Any way, I now own a really fast modified '89 in beautiful shape

My story:

I finally decided to finance the restoration of my car. In the process of getting that my alternator went out - on a date no less. So its at the dealer and I asked them to check out a power steering leak.

What they found:
Fuel line leak over exhaust!
Power steering pressure line leak
Oil line leak
Front engine needs reseal
Oil pan gasket
Rear main seal
Clutch
Lower a-arms - having that checked by others to be sure.
total for the dealer to do it all was the same as the amount I financed to restore the car! I had just signed on the dotted line so im stuck now.

Im doing some work myself and thanks to the rennlist I was referred to a great shop to do the rest. With them I am also getting a new water pump, Sachs clutch (cup), new rod bearings, oil pan pickup modification and still saving $2500 over the dealer. So at least I can still do the paint and body work. Recovering the front leather seats will just have to wait. I think the neoprene seat covers look pretty good anyway. Performance goodies will have to wait a bit as well :-( though I got a LBE :-)

Then I look in the showroom next to the shop and there is a 944 turbo - red, tan interior like mine, 17" aftermarket wheels 42,000 miles. I didnt even ask the price since Im to far into mine to matter. But at least i will have a lot of new parts and mine will look just as good - eventually.

Wink

Here's Mine,

I am a new owner of a 1984 944 for only 3 weeks and 1 day today. It took 22 years since I was 12 when I told everyone that one day I would own a porsche. Well I am now 34 and WOW I finally did it. I drove down to FT. Lauderdale,FL from where I live (Tampa,FL). I went to see this Gold colored 84 944. I spoke with the owner, he showed me all of the maintenance receipts. I drove it for a while, (I haven't driven a stick in over 15 years. I Was able to talk him down to $2500 cash. He agreed. I drove it home in 4-1/2 hrs.

Anyway Fri the 19th, while driving home from work I hear an electrical short kind of sound, and my horns start blaring. When I stop, the horns stop. When I drive they start again. So I wrote to you guys at Rennlist, and I just pulled my Relay till I can check it in the morning. on Saturday the 20th. My family and I went for a drive to St. Petersburg, to check out EuroWebParts, I should've called first because they are only open Mon-Fri. Oh well. So we drove back towards home, and I stopped at Discount Auto Parts to get some Techron for my fuel system. When we got back into the car and I turned the key....Nothing...Nada..Zilch. The car wouldn't turn over. The lights worked, all of my accesories worked but the car wouldn't start. The gut from DAP checked the battery the alternator, and they were fine. the culprit was the starter. So I order one from them (rebuilt $90 + $29 core, not bad for an original bosch unit). So i walked home with my Family. I had to carry my 5 yr old daughter piggyback it was about 1-1/2 miles in 90+ degree weather. Got home Got my Ford F-150 drove back , put the key in the ignition and lo and behold the car started. I floored it back home. My wife couldn't keep up with me (Hehe) in the truck. I raised the car took out the Starter, and gave it to my wife. While she left to take it back I crawled under the car and noticed my power steering pump has a leak. My rear tire has a slow leak due to a nail lodged in it. The car has no spare. The rear defroster doesn't work. The sunroof doesn't work( there is no motor). Boy was I pretty pissed. Anyway at least the PO had the Timing belts changed in OCT. 2001.

Thats.All Folks....Joel
