Question Does Your Cam Tower Whine?

Just a general question. Should I hear a whine from cam gear housing? It almost sounds more like a grind (yikes) than a typical whine you'd hear under the hood. I'm starting to wonder if it's the plastic dust cover behind the rotor. The sound increases with RPM and I've narrowed it down to the housing, so it's not rollers, etc.

My girlfriend is looking to buy a 944 with a noisy cam/distributor. I'd like to see some feedback to the original question before we go and pick the car up.

The sound is very obvious at idle and at low revs. Once up to speed or while driving, sound seems to be less (or masked by other louder sounds).

Since I will be her tame Porsche mechanic - I'd like to get a headstart on diagnosing and repairing the problem. Any past experiences would be most helpful to at least two of us...

I have seen cam gear failure. This makes more of a knoking noise. Incorectly tensioned belts will whine.

By cam gear failure - you mean the belt sprocket? How does that fail? I can't imagine that being stressed enough to fail. The only possible scenario would be too much tension in the belt for an extremely long period of time (and maybe a loose bolt allowing for cyclinc off-axis loading).

My belts whine like a supercharger. Are they to tight, or not tight enough? I replaced them less than 1000 miles ago with the ARNWORKS kit

The belt that makes the high pitch noise is the balance shaft belt...probably too tight or not adjusted correctly:

All you need to know about this stuff:

If the chain was having problems you would hear it coming from the top of the vavle cover...this is not good ! I would put inspecting this higher than the belts, all the belts need is a quick going over.

DO NOT BUY THE CAR UNTIL YOU KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS

Belts can make extra noise as well if they are too loose and hitting the idler pulleys.

My belts scream even after over a year, and repeated retensioning, no matter how loose or tight I make them.
