Sunroof gears and radio gremlins
Well it's been less than a week that I've had my car and it's already giving me some trouble. Though nothing thats happened affects the performance of the car, it's still enough to grate my cheese.
So I get into my car and get ready to leave and the sunroof is rattling after I've got it up. Somehow after I had the top off this morning, I guess it didn't re-enable properly and the gears got themselves stripped. Now one of the arms is about 3 or 4 teeth higher than the other. Though they both still move, I wont use it with them being uneven like that.
Also on the same trip the radio is giving me trouble. I hope its just a loose wire, but the power for the head unit keeps going on and off.
I gotta go, finish later.

IF you have an aftermarket radio(like a blaupunkt florida for example) I have noticed that when they send the "direct" clip on harness, they always put the 12v power line (yellow one , not the red one) in the wrong spot. So there is a god chance that it was "yanked" out and set in the correct location.
Hope that helps

Does the radio have a removable faceplate?
Try pulling it off and putting it back on...mine does what you mentioned after I leave it on for like 6 months...

Well I diagnosed the problem with the radio to be a crappy head unit. After removing it from the dash and fiddling with the wires to no avail, I was able to reproduce the problem by smacking the head unit. I knew the thing was a POS, but I guess I didn't realize how much it sucked.
The factory wires look like they've been hacked to bits, so I think I'll be redoing the stereo in this car so that things are done right. That won't be for at least a few weeks, I'm still broke from buying this car.
As for the sunroof, I don't know if its the gears or not. I suppose it could be, but both arms still move, just one is further extended than the other. I'll do some more investigating in the light tomorrow, but I think the gears might be stripped.
From the reading I've done, it sounds like the gears are back in the hatch next to the motor. If this is the case, I don't know if that is the problem, it seems to be localized to the one arm.
Has anyone exprienced similar problems with the sunroof and if so, was it the gears?

Pretty much the best $100 I've spent on my car (not really but...)
Is I paid the Porsche dealership to FIX my sunroof. They did it properly and professionally, and I haven't had to worry about it since.
Just a thought. I love DIY stuff too, but I got tired of fighting with it.

Nick, unless someone's been screwing with things, the only way the arms can get out of time with each other is to have stripped at least one of the gears, at least partially.
The drive motor, reduction gear, & microswitches are in the left rear wall of the hatch area, but the gears that strip are above the back headliner, in the housings that the arms disappear into. Good news is that the gears are cheap (~$5.00 each); bad news is that getting all the stuff timed (microswitches, gears, & arms) is a major PITA. Buy a couple of extra gears, just in case you eat one or two in the process of fixing it...
Matt has the _real_ FAQ answer, take it to the dealer. <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" />
Jim, sunroof gears...designed by the same dronk dood that did the thermostat snap ring...
