I like Performance Friction Carbon Metallics on my Explorer. Readily available at..shhhhh.....Autozone
Not sure if they now make them for N/A 944, but I think I remember them being available for 951. Last time I checked, around six months ago, N/A was not avail. They now advertise in Excellence.
Update: I just went to their website. They are available for the 951, but only rear pads for 944N/A. WTF?

I don't see a problem with cheap "economy " brake pads. I'm pretty sure automotive parts have to meet certain safety requirments so it's not like cheap brake pads going to be dangerous.
however I think cheaper pads, may last less, be noisier, or produce more dust and have less grip than more expensive pads, but it doesn't mean cheap pads are going to be unsafe.
I put mintex pads on my car and they are the cheapest pads I guess, and for me they squeel like crazy and seem to produce quite a bit of dust even though it says dust / squeel free on the box.
however my car stops fine and I don't have any problems with the organic mintex reds, just the squeeling at low speed braking, which might be due to something else other than the pad itself.
