Post Darn Vibration

I have a strange vibration in my '91 S2 cabriolet...downshifting from 3rd to 2nd, if I dont match revs exactly, whole drive train VIBRATES like heck. It even seems to lock up the rear momentarily, like the tranny is binding or something. I recently had the clutch done, with a spring center. The car did this before the clutch was replaced.

My wrench can't figure it out yet. I have heard transmission mounts, motor mounts, synchros, etc. Any ideas?

Perhaps the transmission mount?

I'm almost certain it comes from something inside the transmission. My nephews car did the same thing, only 3rd to second. Actually I bet your car will do it as well when just cruising in 2nd, push clutch in, let engine revs fall, re-engage clutch.

It must be something that fails internally or is mis-adjusted. His car did it before and after the clutch replacement as well. Somebody else posted here to an earlier thread with the same symptoms on his car. Both my nephews and this other guy's transmission had been into before. I did pull apart my nephews transmission to try and find it, but I never found anything wrong that fixed it, bearings looked good, and clearences checked out.

I found the thread on the "filled transmission mount." Anybody have any experience with beefed up mounts?

I crawled under the back of the car a few minutes ago, and the tranny just seems really LOOSE. I can push the darn thing about 1 inch or so side to side.

Is this amount of play normal????
