Removing Fuel Tank Level Sending Unit - Tips to Remove?
The search function yields no results, so here ya go.....
I have a raw fuel smell in the cabin of my '86 NA so I want to replace the fuel tank level sending unit gasket. I'm having trouble removing the retaining ring, though.
Here's what I'm doing:
- Removed carpet and small adhesive-backed pad
- Removed electrical connector
- Removed gas cap (to equalize pressure)
- Using leather gloves to give me good grip, I've attempted to unscrew the retaining ring (CCW, natch, but even going CW to "break" the seal didn't help).
- The sheet metal of the cargo area floor is keeping me from getting a good grip
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

I have noticed that raw fuel smell in my car too. Did changing the gasket solve the problem? Any other sources for gas leak?
