Ring & Pinion, where?
Where's a good place to buy a ring & pinion for my 84 944. It had the 3.89 (something less now with 1 1/2 teeth missing), but what about the 4.11 I've heard of. Except for the pinion bearing and a carrier bearing, everything else looks good and the thing never leaked so I want to fix it. The best price I've seen was $445 for the 3.89.

The only 4.11 I know of was in the 80'ish 924 - not sure that'll work in a 944 case.
The ring and pinion listed for yours is 9:35 (3.89) and the price you listed is as good as it gets unless you try used.
FWIW, the R&P ratio is usually a good match for the na 944 - to improve acceleration, most folks go one-size-under on the tire height (225/50-15) - 5th gear is usually the dog that keeps the good 944 down on top speed... to change that means cracking the case and installing a shorter gear (from a 944S or the like).
Good Luck!

Try www.porschegears.com Thats where I got my 4.11 I think it cost about $800 US but if you already need to change the r&p I would highly reccomend it, I loved it...(that is before my car was destroyed by a neon) the difference wasn't huge but is was good for a couple carlengths over a stock 944 so go for it.

When the ring & pinion crunched in our '84 several pro rebuilders on the Rennlist 944/968 email list said that there were usually more issues than just the r&p such as pinion shaft bearings possibly leading to the failure and also causing case damage from the bearings moving around. My solution was to put in a used turbo unit but the gear ratios aren't well matched so I traded the turbo unit to another rennlister for a used '88 na transaxle. No cash has been involved yet as the guy I got the turbo unit from has a son that is restoring a 2.0 914 and I have LOTS of 914 stuff laying around as well as 4 914s to scavenge parts from. 8^}
