Newbie Transaxle CLUNK?

Newbie Transaxle CLUNK?
Hi All,
Recently purchased a 84 944. Love the car! I'm a Datsun guy usually, but this car rocks.
Anyway...Had a vibration and slight blender sound coming from the trans. I changed the fluid and then went for a test. Drove about 1/2 mile and after coming to a stop...CLUNK as I released the clutch.
So now it clunks pretty heavily if clutch is engaged, but clutch doesn't feel like it's slipping. Also, the clunk stays with if the car is rolling in neutral. I got it off the ground and if I turn one wheel I can hear the clunk in the transaxle. If I trun the wheel backwards, it feels like it wants to jam up. I recently replaced one CV boot, and bolts all look tight.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.
Ron

Welll,
These cars are pretty notorious for bombing the ring gear in the differential. The transmissions are difficult to rebuild. However, used N/A trannies can be had for a couple hundred bucks.
They arent too hard to swap either. See if you can stick a magnet down in there without losing it. You may pick up some nasty chunkies...
