I have always thought that if you were going to have wood or metal or carbon fiber in your car, use the real thing.

I have never seen a fake one that looks good enough to put in a porsche. Yes, the gt2 looks hot with the carbon console. But Iquestion whether or not I would order it for the price of the option.

I saw a real carbon fiber dash in a 944 once and it looked good. Most of the fake ones I have seen I did'nt like. I have a beige/light gray interior as well and I have always liked how the black trim contrasts with the light interior. I dont think that I would change it. Mabey if I had a black interior I would consider aluminum to brighten things up a bit.

I look at it this way. Carbon fiber wasent considered rice until ricers discovered it. It can be cool if it is done right and is real.

But to each his own I guess.

But then again I'm all about appreciating the 944 for what it is (an 80s sportscar) rather than trying to make it look like it's from 2002. The carbon-fibre-lookalike-stick-on-dash looks "stuck on". I also believe putting a rear valance and a turbo-nose on a NA is a crime. So you know where I'm coming from </strong><hr></blockquote>

So do you think the 944S2 having the front and rear valence acrime too???

Despite the weight addition, I was thinking of buying some sheets of leather, like I did when I re-covered the shift boot and arm rest (for $10cdn), and just covering EVERYTHING in plush, black leather.</strong><hr></blockquote>

Hey Rich besure to join our 944 cruise next spring! We had ablast, about 12 cars showed up. See next year.

I firmly believe that everyone should do what they want & can afford to do to the car that they own. But we are each also free to form our own opinion of the judgement, taste, skill, or maturity of the person who did the modification.

Having said all that, I think the general definition of "rice" is add-ons or modifications that give little or no performance increase (fart cans), just the appearance of one, or that create a "Hey, look at me!" image (light-up washer nozzles).

So, in my opinion, stick-on CF is rice. It's non-functional, it adds a tiny bit of weight without providing any of the functional benefit of the real thing, and it introduces a discordant styling element into a nearly two-decade-old interior design that is an elegant classic in its unmolested form.

But that's just an opinion. Y'all do whatever moves you.

On a related note, at work we bought some pre-made CF strips for materials testing. Three 1" by 1/8" strips, 36" long, cost ~$50. We did our first two successful tensile test pulls this past week. The best of the two pulls gave an ultimate / breaking strength of just short of a quarter-million psi! I'm impressed.. very, very imperessed!

If the price of the material and the labor or technology cost of producing parts with it can be brought down to a daily consumer level similar to that of aluminum, we're in for a significant revolution in engineering materials. Dunno when or if this can / will happen, but I hope it does.

Jim, did I mention that I was impressed?

Ferdinand's company is selling extremely expensive carbon kits for the new 911s. So, I don't think they would consider it rice. My dash had finally gotten to the point that I added a coverlay-is that also rice?

Anyway, as has been said, they are our cars to do with as we will. The people that mind don't matter and the people that matter don't mind.

I really don't consider that a bad thing. It's not like they're adding extreme body kits or anything outrageous. The turbo/S2 nose is more aerodynamic, so it does provide benefits especially at the speeds these cars can travel, which is why they designed that new nose and rear valence in the first place.

In all reality nobody that doesn't see these cars everyday knows that the Turbo has a different nose and the rear valence than the rest, so it's not like they're trying to pretend to be a turbo unless they put turbo badges and things on. The Turbo/S2 style just looks a lot cleaner to me and if I had an NA I would probably want to do that change to it too.
