Post When is wheel bearing shot??

I tightened down my front wheel bearings the other day before a Drivers ED. I was surprised how loose they were when i shook the wheels. I remember reading in the haynes manual that the washer behind the adjusting nut is suppossed to be able to move somewhat. I had to crank the nut to get rid of the looseness in the wheel. Is this an indication that the front bearings may be shot. The car only has 60k miles on it.

Alpine -

If when tightened down correctly the wheel moves still (back and forth - when you shake it) then it's shot.

HTH!

Is it possible that you hadn't pressed the bearings all the way in, or more likely, that the races were sitting a bit out?
If that were the case, then by tightening down that little bugger of a locking nut you might have effectively pressed the bearings into the correct resting place... in which case, you'd need to go back and set that locking nut in the correct place again now that everything is sitting properly (could be too tight or too loose if it changed during your DE).
Good luck.
