Why does the trunk leak???

The rubber seal that goes all around the hatch can be a common failure point after all these years. You will really notice its age if you go through wide temperature swings. Don't even bother trying to adjust the hatch pins just perfect because when the temp drops 50F you can't close the hatch. <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />
Another common leak point is the rubber sealing blocks around the hatch pin receiver setup. Pull the carpet back, shut the hatch and run a garden hose. Look through the hatch glass for your leak points.

in addition to the second leak point ice mentioned, my car also leaked around the tail lights. i took one out and re sealed it to the body which cured *that* leak. i still need to replace those rubber peices but we are entering "desert season" hear in north cali so rain is not a primary concern for me any more.
i made a thread about that re sealing procedure back when i did it... do a search if you're interested.

Jonathan, I owned an 85.5 myself and I am not sure exactly how it does it but it does cause it to leak. Here's what it was on mine: its very likely the "rear spoiler drains" There are two little rectangular holes that drain the water caught by the spoiler top surface. They drain along the glass and out the bottom. You need a small tool to push the dirt out so they run clear. I removed my spoiler and cleaned all the dirt from between the glass and rubber. I had to replace some of the small screws as they rust up. I found some stainless to go back with. After clearing the drains it never leaked. I might have removed some of the rubber from the area of the drain to open it up a bit. Good luck, Doug

check on the top of the hatch between the GLASS and the METAL FRAME. this is the most common part to seperate and start leaking.. if it has a gap, then put a strip of electrical tape across it.. no one will be able to see it becasue it matches the metal frame.

I'll agree with all the previously mentioned leaks spots, and add two possibilities from memory (so maybe not accurate). There is a drain tube under each latch assembly. Check the lower ends of these. Also, your rear sunroof drain tubes go down thru the side storage pockets; check their lower ends.
As mentioned, the hatch gasket, glass seal, and spoiler drain holes are likely candidates, also.
Jim, gone to run errands , hopefully ahead of the crowd...

Doug,
I had the same gut feeling about the spoiler drains, but face it, there is no way clogging them up can cause a leak unless it is between the glass and aluminum frame. I have a nice little stainless wire cleaning hook tool to prove how I have looked into this. I think it is usually the rubber receiver blocks right underneath those spoiler drain exits.
I spent a lot of time looking through the hatch glass with a hose and going and laying in the back while my girlfriend ran the hose all around.
Jim, yes that hatch pin drain assembly is one of the most Rube Goldberg type deals I have seen for a professional build job. One needs to pull the carpet off and check that whole situation out because it can fail in so many places.
