Sometime I think about selling my car, then I take a drive on a winding country road. After that I couldn't possibly sell it.

Actually, if I had $15k-$20k to spend on a car right now, I'd be looking at a late model 928. mmmmmmmmmmmmm....

i am with tabor... sometimes i wish i didn't own a primary car which required me to also own a secondary car. or when i've been working on it every day for 2 weeks and forget what it's like to drive and which i had a car that was a little easier to wrench on and a little harder to break.

and then i'll walk out of a store or work and the light will glint off my hood just so and it will occur to me that there is no other car in the parking lot that i would rather drive home.

before you sell your 944, find a bimmer that you can test drive. take it for a cruise on your favorite road, then go get your porsche and drive the same road, and you will know if you can bear the change.

FYI, my wife's cousin bought a '93 325i recently, and let me take it for a spin. I was impressed. I never drove a BMW, and always thought they were yuppy mobiles with no character (which is why I bought a 944). But the car really drove well--stif, sporty, and pretty quick. It had a smooth feeling 5-speed, and the overall ride was more civil than in a 944. Quieter, less like a race car being driven on the streets.

He paid something like $13k for the car, and it is in MINT condition. It needs some kinda front end adjustments (alignment I guess), but for the money, it really impressed me (until I got my 944 for $7k ;-)

Something to think about anyway.

Andy

I wish I didnt want to sell. Unless, howsa 'bout I go and win the lottery?? Forget it, i think that after I sell the car, the most prominent feeling will be relief, rather than regret. I can always get a new one. It'd have to be lemon yeller though. Anyone interested in a 1987 Lemon yeller 87 n/a with the mods I listed below, and extra set of teledials w/pirelli rubber, a new clutch, new clutch master/slave cyl, recent 4 wheel alignment, all new light bulbs, new filters and fluids, 102,000 miles (belts done @ 95,000), and new accessory belts, not to mention a pristine interior (no cracks), shiny a$$ original paint and a panasonic head unit???

I'd be interested, actually. Some pics would be quite cool. I have yet to see a yellow one in real life, but I'm sure I'd like it a lot.

Hey,

Being a BMW owner for about 12 years now I can advise. Do it and you won't be disappointed. A 92 on 325 is a great car out of the box and there a million things you can get in the aftermarket to improve it if you like. I've only had my 944 for about 4 months and I truly believe that the BMW is easier and cheaper to work on. Maybe because I've had so much practice, I don't know. My first love will always be BMW. Audi just doesn't seem to do it for me although their newer models are getting rave reviews. Still a little stodgy, though, if you ask me. To sympathize, though, I have an '86 na and it feels a little slow but its a totally different feeling. A Porsche is another animal altogether. The BMW E36 series you are contemplating made great strides over the earlier 3-series in styling but is no match for the 944. The 944 is just the *****. Probably haven't helped much but wanted you to have some perspective......

I currently own an early 85 944 and a 94 318i. I love both cars but I view the '44 as the weekend sportscar. The bimmer is the everyday-take-the kids-to-the-grocery-store kind of car. Don't get me wrong-- for out and out car guy kind of driving the 944 beats the bmw.

Besides the wife won't let me trade the bmw for another porsche!

Seriously, no.

It sounds like you've wanted to squeeze more performance out of your 944, so you'll feel exactly the same about a 325 as they aren't fast cars, they are just "medium" paced sports cars like a stock (US) 944.

And if you think a BMW is cheaper than a 944 you can be seriously wrong. I bought my 944 when a friend bought a BMW about 1 year ago, and he has spent more money keeping his on the road. BMW parts are no cheaper than Porsche, and BMW cars have as many problems as Porsche cars do, at least from my small exposure to BMW's.

I like BMW's and 325's but after driving my friends 325 for a while, and owning a 944, I'd never go from a 944 to a 325 as there are no benefits.

Lastly, I don't think I'll change your decision and I'm not "really" trying(that said stay with the 944 ), but really make sure whatever your interested in has had a PPI done, because any car can be a real bitch if not looked after or not in good condition. Sporty cars especially.

Good luck, with your new search.

Sam.

I would MUCH rather have a 20year old 911 than a early to mid neighties BM VAY car.

If Matt is looking for a trouble-free, east going daily driver of a car for the city, a BMW will sure be a lot easier in every way. I love the 911sc, my boss has a perfect one that he's had nothing but good luck with, but I wouldn't want one for city driving and daily stuff. 1) it's too nice of a car to beat up like that 2) while they are reliable, they can be $ to maintain, just like a 944.

E36 3 series is an amazing car, in a different way than the 944, and in a VERY different way than the 911, I don't think you can really say "get that instead"

As far as the "getting a better car" re: the boxster. I think a 911sc is a better car in every way, except ego. The boxster is a cream puff compared to an older 911, and I would only get one if I was trying to impress someone, which isn't my bag at all. Also, you can get the nicest one in town for way under US$20k.

Lemon, relief will not come with any "PREFORMANCE" car. But I do understand what you are saying. It is that money set aside for that OH OH. cheap easy repairs come in the form of your typical everyday car. It is a hard step down.. but peace of mind. But life sometimes dictates that comfort level.

YES! I saw this posting and couldn't wait to get to the bottom so I could reply.

I just bought my n/a last July. Prior to that I was driving a '93 325is that I modified up to full Dinan spec (Bimmer fans will know what that means). I love my 944 (although I could use some more power), but I am still obsessed with my Bimmer (which I regretfully sold prior to my move to Chicago). For relatively short dollars, drop in bilstein sports, H&R springs, Chip, Intake, and a short-throw kit. You will never look back except to check for cops in your rear view mirror. I had a few more tricks under my hood, but nothing that I wasn't able to install in a few hours on my own.

On the highway, I toyed with 540's and e36 M3s that couldn't get away from me, it was great. And as far as the Audi goes, you better plan on a turbo upgrade because I would eat those things like they were cheese and crackers.

BTW... I didn't intend to start some BMW vs. Audi debate, so lets not all get too carried away. I realize that I tend to get a bit passionate when talking about cars.
