Aribop said it sucked and it took a while of pulling and rolling.
So ... what I did.... was cut it straight down the middle at the bottom with a razor blade.
It'll close up well enough when it's back in the car, because the firewall will hold it. And I'll find a way to hold it closed. (Maybe black zip ties)
Plus I had to punch a small hole in the thing to get the ref sensor harness routed a while ago anyway.

If anyone else does this, they may not like this idea. But I trust it, and it made it much easier.

I'll be sure to post pics. Nothing really to take pics of today.

One thing that I was thinking of was to only use the part of the snorkel that seals with the firewall.

What I mean is cut the rest of it off and using some High temp rubberized black flexible stuff to cover the wires.

Yeah, I thought about that.
I'm pretty sure my method will not leak, but if it does I can definitely find a good looking way to seal it up.

Anyone know about that O2 wire? I'm about to order some shielded 16AWG from aircraftspruce.

It doesnt need to be 16AWG, it can be thinner. The ground shield on that O2 wire and the knock sensor are only grounded on the DME end, not the sensor ends.

WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG!

Sheesh... Ive been waitin for ya... You answered right before I clicked the checkout button.
Once again... you da man.
I'll go with 18AWG since that is as small as I feel comfortable with.

And just out of curiosity, the speed and ref sensors are grounded at both ends correct? Or am I wrong?

Hey Calmchaos - sounds like you're moving well on the harness, like to see some pics when you're done. The O2 shield wire ties into the #23 pin on the DME connector on mine not sure on your n/a. Might be the same. I've been doing the same for the last couple of days dissecting and doing my version of 951 CSI on an old harness. Making up a parts list and sourcing out materials. The one connector I'm not finding is the turbo water temp sensor connector. Good Luck!!

Ref sensors are grounded at both ends

Big part of the wire goes into 24 and shielding goes into 23. Same as yours it seems. http://www.frwilk.com/944dme/ I use that picture a lot. Especially when I have to solder wires together. I always like to know why.
I don't envy the fact that you have a turbo though, seems like it would add some complication.
I've ordered all my parts from places listed here. Or you can just ask me what I got and where if you have a specific question.

You may beat me to getting done though because I am doing a transmission conversion at the same time.

I think making the parts list and finding materials has been the hardest part so far.

I included a picture of a plug. There is a white one and a black one. I cannot find them in the PET.

I was going to reuse the housing, but my pin removers aren't big enough to push these sukkas out. So I'm thinking, just replace the housings too.
The only thing is... I have no idea where to buy them... so if anyone knows, please let me in on the secret! Thanks!

If it is in the PET you'll have to excuse my ignorance...

Triple posting in my own thread...
I'm probably just going to buy three sets of the ripault connectors at eagleday and just replace both ends of these connections.
And I'll probably replace that red box too... I hate unplugging that thing.

Ok, all I have left is one set of connectors coming from pelican and then it will be completed. It is tested to match the old harness in continuity, and I'm certain all my solders and crimps are solid.

Once I get the engine back in I will let you know if the harness works . I put a lot of careful time into it, but I still have my doubts. I have the strange feeling I will be trying to buy a used harness soon. LOL

And one more picture to come soon, before the installation. It will be completed roughly an hour after I get my pins.

Hey Calmchaos,

What are you using to crimp the AMP pins? I bought a tool from eagleday, but the crimps it produces are very poor, nowhere near the quality crimps on the original harness. Also are you using the wire seals?
