Kevlar Reinforced Timing Belt???
#46
Hey,
Not that it will actually prevent teeth from ripping off, and not like they are even made for our cars that I know of yet (or ever), but in the last issue of Sports Car (SCCA) Magazine there was a blurb in the hot parts section about some swanky new Kevlar timing belts for the Asian car crowd that are supposed to be indestruct-o.

Back in the day we used Kevlar belts on my RC car. It was by far superior to anything else. Anyone familiar with the Schumacher cat knows they were prone to strip the teeth on a regular basis (crappy pulley design).
Anyway, if it’s the same technology I wouldn’t be surprised to see 60K+ miles.
BTW. For $20, the krikit tool works great…

It was me who started this thread last year. I never verified independently that the belt was kevlar reinforced, just what the mechanic told me. He does good work and works on lots of nice cars, so I have no reason to doubt him, but no one here has heard of it so who knows?
I plan to stick with the normal schedule of 30-45k or 4 years. It's not just the belts that can break and bend your valves. A failed roller or water pump will do the same thing. Retensioning every 15k and retensioning at 45k ensures an opportunity to make sure everything else looks good too. Thanks!

To the original question, "have you heard of Kevlar reinforced timing belts?",,well, yes, just yesterday as a matter of fact. There's an ad in the current issue of "Sports Car", the SCCA magazine, which touts their superior stretch resistance and ability to resist valve timing variation at high RPM. It shows them for Japanese cars, but I'm sure they also make 'em for ours, and just as sure they're a good deal more expensive. As to durability and the elimination of the need for retension I wouldn't know.

Mark,
Look three posts above yours.
So Tom, I already threw out my copy of Sports Car (I rarely keep old mags), but there really was much else to it than what Mark and I posted, other than the name of the company and the phone number and such. Mark, can you fill that in?
