Default What would cause this to happen (water pump question)

I finally head back from Zim's after sending my old water pump in, I'm not getting a refund because the impeller has hit the housing. I'm not too surprised at the outcome, the impeller wouldn't turn when i took it off, so i wasn't that hopeful of a refund on the deposit.

The question i had is, what would cause the impeller to hit the housing? I'm just curious to understand how things like this happen.

I'm just guess, but if the bearing was worn out enough to cause a lot of play, then the impeller would be floppy. At least that's my guess.

Add to that the fact that it is forced to turn by the engine and things can get pretty nasty.
