Sure... They are vastly different. The F1 transmission actually makes the car go faster. The tiptronic does the opposite.

Yea, this was a dumb comment. I highly doubt
that tiptronic was derived from le mans, but anyway, They are two completely different concepts. The tiptronic is an automatic that acts as a manual, and the F1 paddle is a manual transmission. I think the tiptronic was made so people that are lazy don't have to learn how to drive stick ( or people who can't), and this will resemble it the most without getting rid of the automatic tranny. Paddle was derived from le mans and F1 , if anything, PADDLE belongs in a sports car, not Wood. BUt, Even with that, I still think there's nothing better than that ol' manual Shift ****.

Ibelive that the reason that Porsche hasn't offered a sequential gearbox is that they aren't reliable enough. I've geard of all sorts of problems, especially burning the clutch in less than 10.000 kilometers..

One of the thing that I love the most about Porsches is that after being driven hard they just sit there all quiet, sometimes you can smell the brakes but never the clutch and I havenät managed to get my car to tick while cooling off.

When I come home after having driven at speeds between 200 and 270 km/h and turn it off it always just sits there like if it's saying: "I've got more where that came from."

I always respond by saying thanks...

One notable sports racer with an automatic transmission was the Chapparal can am car. The shifting was done with a lever, but it used a torque converter. I remember reading that Phil Hill seemed to like it, but I'm not sure if it actually offered any advantages.

for those of you still doubting the capabilites of porsche's "automatic, non-sequential" gearbox, let the pros convince you:

Excellence Magazine, #103 Article begins on page 64.

after you read it completely, rephrase your argument accordingly.

this banter has made my friendly nature feel exploited. good luck in the future with your opinions.

Are you still going to send me the article? I don't have issue #103.

Perhaps you can summarize. I would be surprised to see how the tiptronic with a torque converter, which by nature absorbs horsepower, and one less ratio would have superior performance to the factory six speed.

What surprises me even more is that, given the advantages of the tiptronic, I haven't heard of them being used in 996's or 993's in top level racing series (le mans, alms, etc).

The last time I recall seeing a automatic transmission in a professional road racing series was in a Lexus GS 400 (okay, not a big dog pro series, but still a pro series... the series name escapes me at the moment, but it used to be called the Firehawk endurance series).

I don't understand why you say this. Is this directed at me?

it is directed to every user i see that insists on pushing their personal opinions on others without properly opening the lines of communication and exploring all angles of the topic at hand.

we don't live behind a communist curtain. if owners want to deck out the interior of their new 996 in mother of pearl trim and diamond studs, by all means let them. if hardcore enthusiasts prefer absolutely no options and a nice six speed to saw away at, go for it.

but none of us have reason to criticize another's opinion just because we may think something looks "ricey" or we have no left leg.

that's it. i am just here to learn and expand my horizons as much as i can while possibly making some new friends in the process.
