Post Belts Belts Belts

Hi All
I have no idea if the 944 I bought has had its timing belts done or not so I am going to do them (it).Should I replace all tensioners, cog wheels and water pump at the same time or save some money and only do the belt.? Thanks for your help.

Do it all. If you do the belts, you are 3/4 of the way to a water pump, and since you don't know if/when the rollers have been replaced, might as well do them too.
The extra money you spend now pales in comparison to the fallout of having one of these items fail after you do the belts.

Do it all, parts will run you 125 -130, plus the waterpump. I put in a rebuilt, others will argue strenously for a new. I've had good luck for a year with the rebuilt.

Why do the waterpump? well, it seems to be very common, and my own experience as well, that the pump will fail almost immediately after doing the belts if the car has +90K.

If you get it back together and it still whines after 1200 - 1500 miles, the belt(s) are too tight.

consider getting the "tool" (9201 + calibration strip) esp if your model does not have auto tensioner. There is a tool share/rent club that may still be in existance if there's no one near that can lend it. Otherwise the $400 - 500 may be a bit steep.

somewhat important item: remeasure belt tension after final torqueing of adjusters. You may be suprised at the result, even if you used the countering tool..

mileage varies. Have fun, observe and mark carefully all relations before removing belts..

(great peace of mind required when assembling German sports car)

Best,
