Nah, if you are still seeing oil on the pistons at this point, it can't be remnants of a blown headgasket. Most/all of it should have blown out by now... me thinks?

Not that this will necessarily fix your problem, but to clean out all of the oil from your intake, you might want to try running some seafoam or run-rite through some vac lines.

I can't remember what the inside of the AOS looks like from the time I had it off, but it sure seems like there should be SOMETHING in there. It's supposed to work like a PCV as far as I can tell.

when i had mine open, it was a cylinder with the drain port on the bottom and crankcase port on the top side and the vacuum port on the lid. inside, there was this bottom open ended cylinder attached to the underside of the lid......and that was it.

i imagine there was supposed to be an element for the oil vapors to condense and drip down. so stuffed in a wad of steel wool and secured it on the lid under the vacuum port. at least immediately, there's less oil fume. we'll see if it holds up

I hope there's no way for the vacuum to suck steel wool fibers into the intake. And/or I hope boost won't push steel wool into the crankcase. But steel wool sounds like a good choice if it stays put. Maybe a rolled up house heater filter instead?

How did you get it open? When I had mine off, I tried to pry the top off, but I gave up as not to break it. lol. . . . . I flushed it out with simple green. Maybe that ruined it? Nothing but oil came out the bottom.

OK, try this.....maybe there's supposed to be some "filter" in there, but over 25 years of constant sucking, its gone? burnt out with hot oil or some such??

Maybe someone could post a pic of the inside of a good used, or new one????

And....how long till my new O2 sensor and cat are ruined with oil going through the engine? Like I said before, its not alot of oil at all...a few drops that sits in the valve reliefs in the pistons, but I'm thinkin no oil is good.

OK, So I did some googling, and reading and it seems that this might be normal. From what I've read (no where on this site however....so being valid, I don't know) a little blue smoke at start up is normal for the AOS system. Pretty much, as long as there is no smoke while driving or anyting after start up, then its fine.

Now my car doesn't ever smoke...even at start up. So, has anyone else ever checked for oil on the pistons of thier cars? Its not easy to see. I used a little LED flashlight I have, and had to pretty much get right on top of the engine to see down the spark plug hole (I'm nosey....and apparently **** about this kind of thing). Like I said, its only a few drops in the valve reliefs. I can't be the first to notice this, but maybe I am??

Thanks all

i pried and pried and broke some tabs permatex sealed it shut afterwards.

as a friend once told me. all you need to fix any mechanical problem is wd40 and duct tape. wd40 for what should move but doesn't. and duct tape for what shouldn't move but does.

same ideology. just substitute duct tape for permatex/epoxy/krazy glue/jb weld

Come on everybody, sing along!

"Give my oil for my pistons, keep them burning burning burning, give me oil for my pistons I pray. Give me oil for my pistons keep them burning burning burning, keep them burning till the break of day."

Sorry. I've been looking at this thread and that song just keeps running through my head.

KA-BUMP!

I'm sorry, I just would like to know if anyone else has seen this, or even looked.

Should I be worried or not?

I have looked into my cylinders through the spark plug holes before, but only on cars where the head has not been off in 10+ years. So the piston tops were caked with black carbon so any oil would not have been visible anyway. Add to that that it's really hard to look all the way down a 6" deep spark plug hole on a 16v car.

But I s'pose it could very well be normal. I'd go out tomorrow and pop out a spark plug and look for you, but the car I have with me here is one with carboned pistons. The other cars are in SF.

well, it doesn't smoke...ever.....and doesn't seem to use much oil (no more than usual) so for now, I'm going to assume "normal"..

Thanks everyone
