So are the fans staying on even after the car is turned off? Are they running in high speed? If the fans stay on in highspeed with the key in the off position there are two easy tests. First disconnect the fan switch. If the fans go off that is your culprit. If not, then pull the AC relay out. If the fans go out then the realy is bad.

 

when they are pluged in, only the low one works - which makes sense

once unplugged though, the fan noticibly slows down, but still keeps going, I think we waited for about 10mnts and it was still going

lastly, with the relay out, it wouldn't turn on - which makes sense

ok so I had just a couple of questions here:
that thermo fan switch - its 75* so it's low temp? is there any difference? from what I understand this will make fans kick in earlier then the 85 or 92 degree one? correct?
2nd where exactly is this switch? I thought it was somewhere on top of the block? but now it seems its somewhere on the radiator? or these are 2 diff. things?

Hmmm...mine hit the HOT mark today for the first time, suprise 97 degrees in Houston on June 2nd, looks like it's going to be a long summer. It's interesting that my temp gauge always stays right in the middle and today I got hot.

Both my fans are working properly I think I am slowly losing coolant from the top drivers side of the radiator and hose...Off to ProTechnik

 

A daft question but is the fan blowing the right way?
I had an 82 944 once with overheating issues when driving.
Turned out somebody had reversed the fan connections. Found out by puffing smoke in front of the grill.
Fan switch on my early car was top right hand side of the radiator. (although it had no ac)
The sensor for the gauge/dme was on the engine.
Thermostat is in the waterpump housing and not fun to get at.

Not had one with ac myself, been raining here for the last 12 hours!!
But thinking about it mine had one fan with two speeds so would be different.
The fan switch should be in the same place though, it would be the first place I would look

mine was on the driver side of the radiator. I got to it from underneath the car, and taking the fans out. very easy.

 

Mines on the passenger side but then it would be being a uk car, I took out the airbox and did it from above. Didn't need to remove the fan but again its a single fan.

you wouldn't happen to have a 12point 8mm allen wrench would ya lol

taking axles off and can't fit a 6 point in there, it keeps slipping out of the bolt (bolt isnt stripped) and it's a real PITA, kinda stuck - trying to chagne rear bearings
