I put up this post to let people know of what I've done to a car I think was/is in great shape from an original owner who garaged it all the time.
These cars come with costs if you want to keep all systems running like new.
I have also poured a great amount of money sound proofing the cabin and putting in a very understated sound system which could probably win some awards somewhere. This car is a lot of fun to drive.

It seems as though you have listed a few things twice (hood struts)...is the other listing your labor cost? And buying from someone like Pelican, Paragon, Rennbay or 944online would save you a good bit...
Adding up what you have spent is akin to having your wife cheat on you, tape it and YOU watching it every day just to **** yourself off... you shouldn't do it. The '87 I bought back in February has some reciepts...the PO spent nearly $5k over 3 years just to break the reference sensor bracket, give up on it and sell it to me at a huge loss.

I do sometimes buy parts elsewhere, but if I am using my regular mechanic to do the work then I usually go with the parts there since that is part of their compensation package.
I have put a lot into this car, but then again I guess I have the means to do it and I enjoy the car.

That is my thinking. As long as the engine block lives up to it's German engineering pedigree, I'm good. I've done most major wear things on the car. Now it's time to take off the sunroof, turn on the custom sound system, and tour about California.

Yes, one is labor, one is the part.

I do not have my spreadsheet handy at the moment, but I have probably put around $11 or 12k in my car since purchasing (not including purchase price). The majority of that is maintenance ... although I might have about $3k or so in suspension upgrades.
I did most labor myself except for rod bearings and t-bars. I have probably owned it for 5 or 6 years now.

It doesn't matter what car you have, any car you plan on keeping and maintaining is going to cost you big money if you don't do any of the work yourself. One Porsche tech I spoke with told me that these cars are easier to work on than Honda's. Now that I am doing a lot of my own work on my 85 I can understand what he means.
